Today we’d like to introduce you to Gena Ortiz.
Hi Gena, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My story has many lessons, trials, errors, and blessings. Being the Makeup Artist, I am today is so mind-blowing to me because I’m truly proud of myself for who I’m still becoming. Anything beauty has always fascinated me. It first started off when I was really young. Hair was truly what I loved doing at first. I would sit for hours and hours with Bratz Dolls being creative with hairstyles and braids. I was always doing someone’s hair, even being so young; I just wanted to do it because that was my hobby. As I got older going into the 6th grade or even a little before that, I started to get into makeup and let me tell you… Once I started, I didn’t stop. It started with eyeliner and mascara, and I just kept going… Going into my freshman year in high school, I was that girl getting up way before I needed to make sure I had my hair and makeup done. Doing those things just made me feel even more beautiful. I was able to be creative and just be me, that’s what true beauty means to me, being your genuine self. I would even do girls’ hair and makeup in class. The more I did it, it stopped being my hobby and became my passion. I was able to go to cosmetology school and graduate. I learned a lot but not too much about the Makeup Industry. So, I practice on myself and a few others until I got enough courage to start my own small business GlamorousGeeBeauty. Meeting people and putting smiles on their face by enhancing what beauty they already have just completes me as a person and makeup artist. I always told myself no matter what I do in life, I just want to be able to help someone and make their day. A lot of people might not think about it like this, but being a makeup artist, I’m able to do that. I get to know my clients first then I get my hands to work to create the perfect makeup look for them and help them get ready for any occasion or just because they need some self-care. The smiles I get and the reaction I see just melts my heart. I make their day, but they also make mine because I am able to do what I absolutely love with such a big passion. All while doing that, I am also a mother and wife as well. They motivate and push me to be the best me I can absolutely be.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, no, and I’m happy with that. If everything was relatively smooth, what did I really learn? I feel like we learn the most when we have challenges. The most challenging thing for me is being patience. Sometimes we can be hard on ourselves when trying to become the best version of who we want to be, but trusting the processing, believing in yourself, and not giving up is key! Challenges are just life lessons; that’s the way I see it!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to think of my work as Glamorous. No matter what makeup look I do it gives everything it needs to for my clients, that’s important to me! My business name is GlamorousGeeBeauty for a reason! Being a makeup artist, I get to pick up a brush, let my hands do the work, and be creative! I can do natural, soft glam, glam, wedding makeup, and even face painting! I like that I am able to adapt to different looks because not everyone wants the same thing! I love working on all skin types, skin tones, and ages. I want to be the makeup artist for everyone and every event!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like most is my family is here! I’m able to see them whenever I can. Family is everything to me. I know a lot of people have to travel just to see theirs. So, I’m thankful I don’t have to do that. I also love how creative and talented a lot of people are in our city! I’m always rooting for the next person. What I like the least is we don’t have much to do! I just wish our city had more places to go to do family activity. More than likely, we always have to make a drive so we can do something different! Hoping more good changes will happen over the next few years.
