Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Caruthers.
Hi Gabrielle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a mother, a wife and creative entrepreneur, my goal in life is to find a balance with my craft and build my podcast community. For 20 years, my work bridges cultural arts, education, and storytelling, to inspire communities as a dance educator, podcast producer and digital media enthusiast.
After a pivot in my career, my mission is to provide a cultural hub filled with toolkits and resources to navigate the visual, performing and multimedia arts industry.
Through engaging content and collaborations with industry experts, I create connections among cultural arts enthusiasts and creatives – driving conversations on my podcast, digital and in-person workshops – centered around podcast production, artist development and creative practices.
Our platform amplifies, elevates and archives stories from various creative entrepreneurs, offering sound advice to help others move their creativity forward.
My mission remains to empower audiences through innovative arts education, using multimedia as a medium, and in-person activations to bridge the gap between artists, enthusiasts and community goers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
During the duration of my career, I’ve faced many obstacles that should have kept me down from accomplishing many things. From navigating postpartum depression, job loss, grief, chronic health conditions, a late ADHD diagnosis, alopecia areata – you would think these things would keep me down. However, I have a daughter who looks up to me and models everything I do. I may be her role model but she is my source of inspiration.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
After 20 years of divesting in the performing arts, I took a step back from teaching dance education. For 30 years, my work stretched across the Southeast Michigan area and beyond. Many know me for instructing in Cecchetti ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, lyrical, liturgical and ballroom. I adjudicated for All City Dance, a special dance repertoire showcase highlighting some of DPSCD greatest performers. I’ve worked with many organizations such as Detroit Dance Center, Detroit-Windsor Dance Academy, Movement of Dance, Inspire 2 Move, Star Factory, and many more.
One of my greatest accomplishments was graduating from Wayne State University’s Maggie Allessee Department of Theatre and Dance with a Bachelor’s of Science in Dance, minor in Communications Studies.
My continued contribution shaping K-12’s dance curriculum for charter prep schools such as Marvin L. Winans Academy, Rutherford Winans Academy and Commonwealth Community Development Academy is celebrated by many. For 18 years, I’ve served as tenor dance educator for DPS Dance Day, hosted at my alma mater Detroit School of the Arts, located in the heart of Detroit, MI.
What sets me apart from many other Detroiters in the creator economy is my whimsical and charismatic charm.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck — I believe in hard work and alignment.
