Check Out Gabriel Woodworth’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Woodworth.

Hi Gabriel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Worthy Finishes didn’t start in a boardroom. The vision began in the 1980’s, when my dad, Doug, was operating a commercial painting company in Houston, Texas. He passed along stories and lessons to me, not knowing that one day I’d follow in his footsteps. Upon my arrival at MSU, I was convinced to join College Works Painting as an intern. I spent the winter of my freshman year knocking on doors & selling paint jobs.

That summer and the years to follow were full of difficult lessons and even harder life transitions. I learned to professionally paint after college and started Worthy Finishes around the same time my dad lost his battle with cancer.

Today, Worthy is a 3 year old well-oiled-machine that is on track to do huge numbers while still maintaining the values that got us here; providing a seamless experience for every customer that we get to work for.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every day is filled with mistakes, tests, and lessons. I’m working on my stoicism; remembering that every problem that comes my way is temporary.

Losing my father was the biggest roadblock in my life. So nothing could ever be worse than that. It’s actually a blessing and a curse.

The beautiful thing about painting is that we can easily fix any mistakes that get made. The key is communication with our customers and our guys. I think our communication is what has gotten us to this point.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I believe that to be a good leader, you must be an excellent #2.

In the years leading up to the start of Worthy, I worked as a production manager for another local painting company. I took an insane amount of pride in being my bosses go-to-guy. I never imagined that I would be leading people because I was so comfortable in the role of ‘Robin’ or ‘Scottie Pippen’. That’s an insanely important role to any successful team.

Luckily, my last boss insisted that I needed to go out on my own and forge my own path. Since then, I haven’t looked back.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
The Rewatchables (Bill Simmons, The Ringer Podcast Group) is always on in the background for me. Ironically it helps me to quiet my mind and think critically about my life & circumstance whenever I am alone.

I also would be nothing without Google Calendar.
