Today we’d like to introduce you to Derwynn Matthews.
Hi Derwynn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hello, I go by Derwynnwho I’m a visual director. Self-taught, began directing music videos in my hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Throughout the years, I have documented world tours for various artist, directed and shot music videos for celebrities’ social media platforms. My work has been displayed on major music television networks such as MTV, BET, REVOLT, and more. I’ve also collaborated with artist such as P. Diddy, French Montana, Nick Cannon, Snoop Dogg, DMX, SZA, Tee Grizzley, Amongst many more. My career has shifted in the past 2-3 years I consider myself more of an entrepreneur, I still shoot music videos from time to time, but now I mainly create my own content. Lifestyle vlogs, mini reels, etc. I’ve accumulated 60,000+ Tiktok followers and mostly known for my cleaning lifestyle videos.
I also recently opened up a mobile video game truck rental company called VIP Mobile Entertainment; we are currently the most popular video game truck servicing the metro Detroit area. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve definitely have had my fair share of obstacles as any would. I’m from Detroit, but I’ve lived in several places like New York, California, Atlanta in pursuit of chasing my dreams. Over the years, I’d move to one of those cities for a short period of time but always end up back in Detroit because I’d run out of money lol. It was very discouraging, but last time I moved back to Detroit 3 years ago, I told myself next time I move out of the city again, I’d never have to move back. Fast forward to now, I’ve established myself and my businesses and am planing on moving to Florida at the end of this year. The past has definitely taught me a lot along this journey, and it was all worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My biggest accomplishment so far in my career is back in 2016 I filmed the whole Bad Boy Reunion tour. I worked with Bad Boy on and off for about 2years straight. I’d say my most recent accomplishment would be completing my first film called “The Bandemic” I am Producer, Director, Director of Photographer & Editor of that film.
How do you define success?
I think success can be any personal goals you set for yourself and accomplish. I think success if different for each person.
