Today we’d like to introduce you to Corazon Szell.
Hi Corazon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started playing the guitar, singing, and getting into music back when I was 8 years old. My father signed me up for classical guitar lessons and I did that until my freshman year of high school at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts. Once I arrived to LaGuardia I turned my attention towards jazz and landed myself in the jazz band my sophmore – senior year. I then set my sights on pursuing jazz guitar in college and that is how I found myself here in Michigan at UofM. I completed the 4 year program earning my bachelors degree in Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation. While attending the school of music, I started my own folk band called North Ingalls at the start of my junior year and it has been my passion project since then. In the past three years we have performed in many of the venues around Ann Arbor, released our 9 track debut album called “To Be Loved Back,” and went on an east coast tour this past summer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road. I would say the biggest challenge is finding the balance between the creative work and the business work. As an independently run band, we don’t have a large team focusing on different aspects that are required to make a band successful nor do we have a large budget to fund a lot of these aspects. And so for instance while we were in the studio last year recording our first album, I was also actively running a kickstarter in order to be able to fund the project. Sometimes the creative takes the backseat and sometimes the business takes the backseat but it is always important to not let one take over entirely.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently I am the bandleader / band manager / lead singer and guitarist / and songwriter for my band North Ingalls, currently based in Ann Arbor, MI. I am most proud of the album we have created so far called “To Be Loved Back.” It is a 9 track album that we just released this past January and it is a culmination of the past 3 years as a band. We started in my junior year of college back in 2023 and have continued working towards making North Ingalls into a professional band. I am proud that we continue to put the work in every single day to see small but impactful progress towards our end goal.
