Check Out Chane’l Nelson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chane’l Nelson.

Hi Chane’l, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Vibes Detroit is a Social Media Platform, and Blog started in July 2021 by Chane’l Nelson an Eastside of Detroit Native and Wayne State University Alumni.

I originally got into digital editing in middle school. I used to bring my digital camera to school and on adventures around the city to capture memories with my friends. But I’ve always had more of a passion for scenery and architectural photography/videography. My love of exploring Detroit first started with my mom. Before I was old enough to walk, she’d have me at festivals, museums, and various restaurants throughout the Metro Detroit area. Having cultural and well-rounded experiences around the city became a staple during my upbringing.

During my time at Wayne State, I started making my own money, working in cancer research, and I used to spend a lot of time exploring the new restaurants opening up as part of the resurgence of Detroit. I’ve always believed in pouring into and supporting your own community first. I began creating lists in my phone for places to visit and recommendations on places to go for friends. Originally, I planned on creating my blog prior to Covid; however, I also started my career in the medical field full-time around the same time, and the pandemic became all-encompassing.

After the pandemic and seeing so much loss in my career I decided to create VibesDetroit as a way to celebrate “outside” being back open as well as highlight the businesses in and around Detroit-many of which were struggling coming out of the pandemic.

It’s a little over a year since I started my platform, and I’m absolutely overwhelmed by all of the support I’ve received. It’s been a blessing being able to meet and work with many of entrepreneurs in the Metro Detroit area and also help connecting people in the city as well as visitors with fun things to do.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacle has been creating space for balance. I work full-time as a medical social worker with about 100 patients on my caseload, which is demanding, along with creating and managing VibesDetroit solely. What’s helped me the most has been creating a content creation calendar…and sticking to it! Along with creating to-do lists for my personal life and task lists at work…my life is run by lists these days, but that’s what keeps me sane, Lol.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create content for Metro Detroit Businesses including restaurants, art galleries, fitness studios, medical spas, and clothing brands. I also blog about my experiences on my website. I specialize in content creation and blogging. I’m most proud of the feedback I receive from my social media followers hearing that my followers propose/get engaged, have first dates, birthdays, and plan visits to Detroit based off of the places I’ve blogged/posted about is the ultimate reward. The community is who I do this for.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I definitely see growth in the use of social media for advertising with the use of technology becoming increasing pivotal in helping us navigate our lives; I believe that more and more businesses will began to look towards social media for marketing needs. I also think more people will begin to look at content creation and digital marketing as a way to generate personal income.

I also predict more growth in the city of Detroit. With Detroit being highlighted as a 2022 place to visit and hosting many upcoming events, I think we’ll see many positive changes in the city. Growing up in Detroit and living here all of my life the story of Detroit’s comeback feels personal to us natives. My hope is that those who grew up in the city like myself continue to be included and a part of the change in Detroit.
