Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started as a fan of all things music and DJ culture. I grew up listening to and admiring so many house DJs in the Detroit scene. I was always writing music and singing since I was a child, but in 2018 I chose to learn the craft and pursue music from the perspective of a DJ. A good friend of mine taught me some of the basics of DJing, very soon after I bought my own DJ gear and from there I continued to expand my wings. Being an ongoing student of the music and culture, while also diving in 100% on production, self promotion and brand development has gotten me to where I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve had so many great opportunities and collaborations in this industry but It hasn’t been a perfect journey. There is a lot of uncertainty, ebbs and flows to pursuing a DJ career. You learn new skills and develop strengths by trial and error. Some of the struggles I faced or continue to balance are creative burnout, building meaningful connections in a competitive landscape, finding time to celebrate growth while pursuing so much more, merging the creative side and business side of being a DJ.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a singer, producer and DJ. I specialize in house and dance music. I’m known for high energy performances, music / art that inspires, and bringing heat to any dance floor. I’m most proud of my consistent growth in my original music. I’m continuously evolving my sound and expanding my voice.
My secret weapon that helps me propel my vision, is that I am a graphic artist, web designer, video editor and director. You learn to do it all to save money, work faster and execute exactly as you see it.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Instagram is the number way I promote, share and stay connected to my audience. Keeping things engaging and consistent with content is apart of the DJ business. My go to creative apps are adobe photoshop (flyer and promotional assets) and Final Cut Pro for video editing.
Outside of creative tools, a book that inspires my spirit and helps me tune my mind in the right direction is “Ask and It Is Given by Esther Hicks and Jerry Hicks” if you believe in the power of manifestation and need something to get you on track, I do recommend this book. Sometimes I revisit it just to make sure i’m still aligning with simple truths we can often forget.
