Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernie Doyle.
Hi Bernie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Established in 2017, D & B Rustic Timber Designs, LLC is rustic home decor venture located in the charming little Michigan town of Pinckney. It all began with a passion for natural elements and a deep-seated desire to craft personalized pieces that infuse warmth and character into homes.
Our commitment to sustainability is ingrained in our ethos. We responsibly source our wood from storm damage, giving new life to materials that would have otherwise gone to waste. Each piece tells a unique story, reflecting the beauty of nature’s imperfections.
Through our participation in three annual craft shows, with a focus on the vibrant fall months, we have had the opportunity to connect with people from all over the state of Michigan and beyond to share our love for handcrafted design. Leveraging the power of social media, we have expanded our reach and gained recognition for our distinctive creations.
Specializing in custom designs, we work closely with our clients to transform their ideas into tangible, one-of-a-kind decor that resonates with their individual style and sensibilities. Anything from seasonal wreaths all the way to rustic tables and benches. We also created a line of rustic Fairy Doors and Cottage sure to invoke the imagination of young and old. These are also created using old barnwood and natural elements.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been and continues to be a challenge getting our name out to people looking for unique, handcrafted rustic decor. We simply cannot compete with Amazon, Wayfair, or Pottery Barn, even though our designs are one-of-a-kind and made from quality materials. Yes, our products may cost a few dollars more than buying from an overseas company; however, there is no match for the workmanship and quality. People also want everything NOW, and we do not have a warehouse with a stockpile of product. It is only 2 of us creating all of the product we sell.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in and handcraft Rustic Home Decor. We are most proud that we have been able to sustain our little business with very little startup capital. I believe we are most known for our unique pieces and the quality of the workmanship and that sets us apart from others. We forage for some of our supplies, such as pinecones, acorns, grapevine, and tree fungus. Oh, and Fairy doors and cottages. That product alone has provided a lot of recognition as it truly is unlike anything you can find online and stimulates the imagination.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I always liked planning and doing things that were “out of the box.” There was nothing better than a good party where we did things that no one else did. For instance, when I was 16, I planned a girls’ pajama party out in the woods where you had to walk over tree bridges and through thick brush to find the campsite. There, we pitched tents and roasted hot dogs and just enjoyed being out in the woods telling scary stories. No “girl group” did that back in the day. I’ve always had a drive to create. My mom taught me to sew, and that is how I stayed in style as we did not have a lot of money, and there were 5 children in the family. This was back in the 60’s-70’s, and it was “normal” to make your own “stuff.” From there, I ended up in the healthcare field, eventually owning my own consulting company. (I was the only employee) When I retired, I knew I had to do something and started crafting again. Well, then my guy David (who is an amazing woodworker) and I decided to try to make a few extra dollars creating and selling things. We just love to make things!
