Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Cline-Paré

Hi Ashley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always loved taking photos. Since I was a young girl, I would carry around disposable point and shoots and carelessly take photos of whatever caught my eye. As I got older, this transitioned into taking photos of my friends and family. I think my passion for photography is comparable to my love for collecting. I have always loved finding and keeping small treasures, and that is what capturing an image feels like for me. I went to university for Political Science with the goal of pursuing law. Somewhere along the way I realized I enjoyed taking and editing photos way more than studying politics. When it came to deciding whether I’d apply to law school or pursue photography, it felt like deciding between what I thought I should be doing and what I knew would fulfill me. I’ve been a professional photographer for about 5 years now. I am for the most part self-taught; I enjoy learning by throwing myself into a situation and seeing how it works out.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the major obstacles I have faced throughout my career is my fear of rejection and not being good enough. I have held myself back from pursuing opportunities simply because they were out of my comfort zone, and consequently have interrupted my own growth. I have yet to pursue photography full time, because I am worried about not making enough money to support myself. Being an authentic artist while making money is still something I am trying to figure out. Struggling is not necessarily a bad thing, because it helps us learn where to grow from, and what is important to us.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a commercial photographer focusing in portraiture and editorial. I love capturing people candidly and authentically. Photography is just as much about the connection I make with my subject as it is about taking a photo. I also have a great love for analogue photography, and use that to capture the intimate moments of my life. I think what sets me apart is my love for play; I love experimenting with composition, shooting style and trying odd things in my work.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am an open book, so this is a hard one for me. I think something people would be surprised to know about me is that I am also a personal support worker!
