Today we’d like to introduce you to Anissa Lea.
Hi Anissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I found my love for singing at the young age of 5. I grew up in a home enriched with music. My mother is a piano player and my uncle is a drummer. My mother, Emily, would teach me about all the different styles and genres of music. I would drive to work with my mom, we would listen to music and spend the most memorable times together. My mother is someone who inspires me. She always gives me a platform of hope, which drives me to believe in myself from a young age. Well, you see, I have always been a little bit of a different thinker, I always have a different outlook on life. I think out of the box. Finding the good in everything and a story to write a song. This would make me stand out from the rest of my peers. But one thing for sure, that I knew about myself, is my passion and love for music. It is a happy place in my life. It’s where my soul grows, and that is something that no one could take from me. I immersed myself in music and vocal lessons. My mom would walk me down the street from her work between shifts and take me to my vocal/piano lessons at Wonderland Music. This was the highlight of my weekends. -I would absorb as much as I could and then some. It fueled my soul every time I would study the vocal greats, I could not help myself but fall in love with the world and sounds of Jazz and classic popular standards of music. My constant curiosity drove me to want to learn more. I have had many great vocal coaches and still do, Including George Johnson, and Jazz Vocalist Kate Hart. I even traveled to New York to study the vocal styles of Broadway with Bob Marks. I could never learn enough.
While learning, I formed my own style and sound through the years. I was fortunate enough to have others in the industry take the time to listen to my style of singing with my music. I respect the sound of real instruments and how it brings my voice to life.
As time passed, I asked my family if I could record some of my songs in the studio.
After recording my tracks, I submitted them to my attorney, Sheldon Kay, “The Rock N’ Roll Lawyer.” He was kindly helping my family navigate and understand the music industry. He really loved the sound and style of my vocals. Sheldon submitted my tracks to Alex Greene from The Greene Group, and it has taken me to where I am at today. I was fortunate to have Alex like my vocal style/technique and take me on as his client. He helps me refine my style of singing, giving me my fingerprint in the music industry. From this point forward, I have my first album out on shelves in record stores today, self-entitled “Anissa Lea”. It has one of my favorite original’s called “Trapped Inside”. You can learn more about me and my music on my website at www.anissalea.com. Currently, I am recording my second album with more originals, it will be coming out soon!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the entertainment industry, you get about 100 no’s before you get that one yes that helps you change your life. It is so important to remember to stay true to yourself and believe in what you are doing. I like to describe my musical journey as “Climbing up a mountain in the rain* you take some slides downwards, but when that sunshine comes out, you get to climb up that mountain a little more. I am always learning and always climbing. Music is a never-ending life of creativity and self-expression. You will meet people along the way who might not be on your side or a supporter, but that is when it is time to learn to move forward and find people who will respect and appreciate your talent. Pleasing the world is almost impossible, but having self-love and self-respect will always be a winning formula to success.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an American/Italian singer/songwriter from Detroit. I like to captivate my listeners with heartfelt original songs and soulful renditions of popular standards. My musical influence of Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, and popular standards are my inspiration. This includes the Motown sound and other popular groups from the era. I wear my emotions for the world to see through my music. I only wish to sing songs and write music that resonates with me and my fans. A song should move your soul to a place the only music can. You will be able to feel this emotion through my break-out original, “Trapped Inside.” I am currently recording my second album that will be coming out soon. It has a cool vibe with more of my original tracks that will distinguish me as a vocalist and a place in the industry.
I have my own vocal style, and I am on my own path and musical journey. I really don’t compare myself to others. I have my own fingerprint and style to my music/vocals and originals. I feel that I am very lucky to learn from the greats who have paved their way through the music industry to give a foundation for others to learn from. Everyone brings their own style and grace.
