Check Out Angie Williams-Chehmani’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Williams-Chehmani.

Hi Angie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Dr. Angie’s Tutoring & Learning Resources Center as a grassroots mission to support K-12 students in underserved communities in and around Ypsilanti, MI after COVID19. My grand opening was in June 2021 at 317 Ecorse Road, Unit 1, Ypsilanti, MI. I started as a limited liability company offering one-on-one and small group tutoring for an affordable price. Over the years, the business’ reputation grew and so did my client base. In March 2024, I decided not to renew my lease on Ecorse. To provide more accessibility, I started meeting students at local libraries, which are strategically located throughout communities and readily accessible by foot or public transportation. I also transitioned Dr. Angie’s Tutoring to a 501(C)3 as recognized by Michigan and the IRS. This status opened up more grant opportunities. In fact, a grant and service fees made it possible to purchase and renovate a mobile unit to provide yet another accessibility option to students needing tutoring. I am committed to bringing affordable and accessible tutoring to students in underrepresented areas.

Dr. Angie’s Tutoring is unique in that I only focus on reading, writing, math, and homework. Lessons are geared towards the learning style and learning preferences of the student. It’s very individualized. Students have goals and benchmarks. I provide all materials and lesson plans. The student just has to come with the right attitude.

I also try to support the communities where I have tutoring services. Dr. Angie’s Tutoring is represented at quite a few events in and around Ypsilanti.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business always has its challenges.

Currently, my most pressing issue is finding tutors that match my mission, vision, and energy. I want tutors to be knowledgeable, creative, fun, and open to various tutoring methods. I want students to enjoy learning, and tutors to be engaged with teaching. I want committed tutors who have a passion for helping students and get excited when students succeed.

Another challenge is time. I still work full-time as a college administrator by day. So, the majority of tutoring happens between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. after school hours. There are so many aspects that go into a business: marketing, finances, social media, training, etc. I keep very busy.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have made a career as an educator for more than 25 years.  I am proud of that. I wasn’t the straight A student. I struggled in school. Most people will not admit that school was a challenge. There’s level of shame in it, but I think it helps me relate to the students that come to Dr. Angie’s Tutoring for help. I understand what it feels like to think you’re not smart and not know where or how to ask for help. However, with a good support system of my parents and some role models, I earned a doctorate. Who would have thought it?

I hold a doctorate in higher education from Bowling Green State University (OH); a master’s in English: professional writing from Wright State University (OH); a bachelor’s in communication and English from the College of Mount Saint Joseph (OH); and a certificate of deaf studies from Sinclair Community College (OH). I also hold a PK-12 Administrators Certificate from the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Someone once told me, “Find a need and fill it” and “Don’t start if you can’t afford to lose money.” I know that time would be a factor, but it takes a lot of time. Make sure it’s something you enjoy, you believe in, and you can commit to. It can take a few years to see the results and turn a substantial profit.
