Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Matusik.
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have lived in the West Michigan area for my entire life, raised in Rockford MI. As a member of Gen Z, I have lived in a world where cameras have been ubiquitous since I have been born. However, if I had to point to a specific event where my interest in photography began, I would say it was a high school digital photography class that I took. I initially took the class since it seemed to be an easy way to get my high school art credit. However, as I took the class, I began to develop a greater appreciation for the craft. Rather than simply pointing a camera in a general direction and pressing the shutter button, it was an art that took into consideration many factors, such as composition, color, and lighting. After taking the class, I viewed photography as a fun pastime to partake in from time to time. I didn’t think of photography as something that I would seriously try to get into as a profession. That mostly came from my experiences in the COVID pandemic and in college. These caused me to reevaluate my priorities in life. This led me to desire self-employment and its ability to allow me to create my own schedule and to truly own and control my work. In this pursuit, I have decided to use my photography skills.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a neurodivergent individual, I have faced a certain degree of discrimination for my needs. This mainly came from school administrations. However, in my adult life, I would say that I have had a relatively smooth road. I can mainly credit this to a support friend circle and a supportive family.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Mainly working under the name “Forest Photographer,” I would say that a crucial and informing aspect in my work is my interest and love of the sciences. It was one of my favorite subjects when I was in school and has taught me to appreciate the wonder of the world around us. In terms of specialty, while I am intending and working towards branching out, most of my work tends to be focused on wildlife and landscapes. Part of this is due to my love of nature. As long as I can remember, I have always been a nature lover, with my interest growing from wandering the woods behind my house when I was a kid.
