Caleb Opp of Grand Rapids on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Caleb Opp and have shared our conversation below.

Caleb, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I have had to rebuild and restart my business three times. This truly is my passion. I first started my business in 2011. Over six years, I built a sustainable business that allowed me to balance my personal and professional life. Then I met my husband, lol. Crazy how a good love story can disrupt and change your entire life course. I found myself selling my business, my house, and my car to move to Chile to be with the love of my life. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to make this love story happen. While in Chile, I did numerous fashion and editorial shoots. In January 2020, we were approved to return to the U.S. with a K1 visa, or fiancée visa. I arrived on February 29. Before coming back to the U.S., I restarted my business and had booked 19 weddings. Things looked great for restarting my journey here with my photography business. Then COVID happened. I lost all but two of those bookings. It took two years to get to a place where I could make photography my full-time job. Finally, this third build of my business has been successful again. I am beyond thankful for every one of my clients who have trusted me to capture their stories.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have been so lucky to have lived my dream job for the last 13 years! Yes that is more than 300 weddings, 4 countries and many states. Its such a special thing to share an experience like this. My BFA in photography along with my experience in Advertising, documentary and fashion photography has given me a unique view on the process of recording your wedding, event or promoting your small business. Emotion, the details and the connections made are my focus for the day.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband 100%

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Be kind and true to yourself.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
No lol. I am internally a very nervous and self-conscious person. But I have learned to hype myself up before every job and remind myself I am a bad ass, caring, and understanding person. Know that as I photograph you I fully understand any insecurities you might have, and when encouraging you, I am also reminding myself of my worth and beauty.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
Always with my fur babies and husband or while traveling and seeing how big and beautiful the world truly is!
