Tina Black shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Tina , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I am currently finishing up my book called BE Married, a project I have been working on for years. I finally had the courage to do this! I have felt like a fraud. I never want someone to think we are a perfectly married couple, or I am a perfect wife.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Tina Black, Author, speaker, leadership coach, and entrepreneur. I currently own 9 Paul Mitchell Cosmetology Schools and Salons in Michigan and Florida. I am a leadership and business coach with Next Level Salon Leadership. I work with salon owners and leadership teams to help them build healthy, scalable businesses rooted in strong leadership, clear communication, and aligned culture. What makes my work unique is the blend of practical business strategy with personal development – because businesses don’t grow beyond the leaders who run them. Through coaching, courses, and speaking, I help leaders move from chaos to clarity and from growth to legacy.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband Bryan. In 1998 I was in Dental Hygienist. He told me he wanted to buy a cosmetology school. He saw it not just as a business, but a ministry, and he believed it was meant for me long before I could see it myself.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Well, actually there was a season that I did give up! Years after buying our first cosmetology school, we opened our first salon. We lost a significant amount of money and ultimately made the difficult decision to close it. That season taught me more about leadership, systems, and resilience than any success ever could. In fact, it is what promoted me to start a coaching business for struggling salon owners.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
That growth doesn’t solve problems, leadership does. Most entrepreneurs chase more revenue, more locations, more opportunities, but without mature leadership, growth only magnifies dysfunction. I’ve learned that slowing down to build leaders is the fastest way to build anything that lasts.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Leadership is a sacred responsibility. You’re entrusted with peoples’ time, potential, confidence and livelihoods. How you lead shapes not just outcomes, but lives; and that weight should never be taken lightly.
