An Inspired Chat with Tevyn Grayson of Kalamazoo

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Tevyn Grayson. Check out our conversation below.

Tevyn, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Who are you learning from right now?
Right now… I would say I am learning from my fiancé! She is teaching me how to have fun and enjoy life.

For so long, I have been serious and purposeful about things I do and considering loved ones in my actions to make sure I am representing my family and brand intentionally. I spend a lot of time connecting with my children and taking advantage of the teachable moments constantly. A running joke between them is “dad is going to give a speech”.

But seriously, she is showing me how to enjoy life outside of the purpose. Enjoying friends and family and traveling to see things with someone that you feel yourself with. I am really grateful for that and this unlearning and relearning phase of life!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
This is my second time around, so I feel like a regular!

My name is Tevyn Grayson! I am the CEO/President of Grayson Accounting Service in Kalamazoo, Michigan. We offer bookkeeping services to small businesses and also support with business consulting from a financial perspective. Most of our clients are nonprofit organizations currently, and we have helped them to understand the reports and metrics that help them in growing their mission.

The thing that makes us unique is how we show up for our clients and the commitment to relationship building! We believe that finances and financial processes don’t need to be a stressful situation. When the reward to the process is clarity, people approach it a lot differently.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
That’s a good question! One person I will always remember that pushed me before I could see it myself was my brother Rashad! We come from different households, but that is my brother all the same! Shout out to my brother Darron, too!

And it isn’t to say that a lot of people haven’t been supportive or poured life into me throughout my journey. I could literally list about 20 off the top of my head. The thing with Shad was that he was someone I looked up to, too! We had a mutual respect for each other. Well, me, Shad, and Main all had a respect for each other in one way or another. But I think with him it resonated because I knew Shad as someone that protected his family and looked out for his younger brothers, and I admired that. So, it meant a lot that he pushed me to be great!

As I started to get out of my shell as most teenagers do, he helped me realize that I had a purpose that would help the people I care about in a big way!

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me that what we have here is precious. I believe the success of it all will continue to show me how to keep it and fuel the future. But suffering has helped me appreciate today and the people that I have with me. There are some special people in my life and being able to share moments with them is everything and more! The adage goes “you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone” nowadays I know what I have, and I am grateful.

Losing people, and losses in general, put me in a place of gratitude that makes any accomplishment meaningful.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to believe that I could learn enough to avoid mistakes. That if I listened to my elders and learned from other’s mistakes that I could actually avoid them all in my life.

Not only was I wrong, I was horribly wrong!

But I learned that life is about choices and learning, as cliché as that sounds.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Wow… I really hope they say that I cared deeply. Different people see different things that I care about, but I hope that in any situation they can see the authenticity and passion that I feel. I try to do things with all of me, and I have been fortunate to find somethings I am good at but all of it is to translate to my children because they are so much better than I am!

My son is so smart and diligent! My daughter is such a beautiful soul! And my bonus daughter is full of life!

I love them so much and each of them will be the legacy that I leave, and I hope people tell them stories of how I cared for all of us!
