Rising Stars: Meet Nikki Ludema of Downtown Grand Rapids

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Ludema.

Nikki, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a kid, I always wanted to do something that made a difference. I knew I was artistic, but didn’t know how I could use that to make money or help others so I chose to become a nurse. Then I did the flowers for my own wedding (would NOT recommend!) but I realized how much I loved color, floral, and design in general. I knew then that my nursing career would be cut shorter than originally expected. I spent the next 13 years learning as much as I could, freelancing for other designer’s, started a wedding business out of my home, and got a retail job in a local floral shop all before I took the leap of opening my own shop. And here I am, loving it even more than I would have imagined!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. In 2020 during the pandemic, I was working as a nurse, running an event business, and gave birth to my 3rd child who then had a health crisis. This experience taught me where my limits were and how to pay attention and care for my body which is a skill I still employ daily as a boutique owner. In 2024 my husband lost his job which expedited the launch of Niksi. During this time, I ruptured my achilles tendon and signed the lease for our Studio Park location 1 day before surgery and 2 days before elections. We completely rennovated the shop ourselves in 6 weeks while I was alternating between crutches and a scooter and grandparents were watching our children daily. Then come tariffs, a fire above our space, and a world that is on edge. I know more than ever that this job is not for everyone. But through all of it, I am seeing the difference that business really can have on a community and and I’m so touched by how my community has rallied for me!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I own Niksi Home & Floral. We sell colorful home goods, gifts, and fresh floral. Color and intentional design are really what set us apart. When you walk into the shop, its a feast for the eyes! I organize the shop with different coordinated color schemes so you can get inspired with ideas for your home. It’s warm, inviting, and yet invigorating all at the same time. I like to curate a mix of styles so anyone can come in and find a unique piece to add character and interest to your home. I’m a little obsessive about colors, flow, and want to make sure everyone feels welcome. I love getting to know more about the people that come into the shop and have had all kinds of interesting conversations!

What’s next?
There are SO many big things happening this next year! Though some I can’t announce yet, what I can say is that we will be ramping up on workshops and events and exploring ways to expand our space to accomodate these needs.
