Rising Stars: Meet Erin Schmidt of Metro Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Schmidt

Hi Erin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Years ago, I was working an office job and I was so unhappy. I found an old letter I had written my Grandmother talking about how much I love photography. This random find inspired me to pick my camera up again.

I learned and hustled for years; saying yes to everything, staying up all night learning, doing a lot of free work to make connections in the industry and essentially pay my dues. Fast forward 13 years and I’ve been able to niche down to photograph the things I love, be the sole provider for my family and be my own boss.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely not easy. What’s that saying – If it was easy, everyone would do it? I overcommited myself to my business a lot in the beginning and missed out on a lot of things in my personal life. Businesswise, I made some mistakes and undervalued what I had to offer. Ugh and imposter syndrome! It’s a thing and will really mess with you if you let it.

You live and you learn and through it all, I can confidently say, I am still so in love with my job.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The bulk of my business is focused on authentic & timeless wedding photography. Alongside wedding photography, I also specialize in photographing personal brands, corporate events, newborn lifestyle and families.

I’d say I am most known for my vibrant editing style and my Detroit focused work. I stay away from trends and follow my heart with my creative direction and editing style. I love what I do and I really think it shows through my work.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Ever since I was a little girl, Detroit has always inspired and excited me. It’s so rich in magic, beauty and history – it never gets old. Those feelings just seem to take my work to another level.
