Rising Stars: Meet Daiya of Metro Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daiya.

Hi Daiya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born on the westside of Detroit and that should tell you everything. lol not everything but a lot about my origin and where im coming from. I grew up in a greek (NPHC)household and service to all was something ingrained in me from the start. As a child, I was very active in the arts from music class to theatre camp. Between now and then I’ve volunteered, created fundraisers, started my career, picked up hobbies, forgot about a few, and honed my craft in others. Things that I’ve been passionate from the start stuck with me, such as my passion for the environment and natural spaces, community engagement, and storytelling.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I tend to go about things my own way, sometime there is a road bump. Between COVID and finishing college it’s hard to follow your “dreams” splitting your time. I went to school in east lansing but my roots and artist career were still in East Lansing and it wasn’t until I graduated I was able to spend more time exploring my art. It wasn’t until after I graduated I had more opportunities.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work as a creative in the city of Detroit entailed tie dying, stick and poke tattooing, modeling, and DJing, What I specialize in is DJing I love to spin open format you can usually catch me spinning open format with a little bit of house, from afro house to ghettotech i’m gonna play it all. What I’m most proud of is my authenticity and how my music sounds like where I’m from. I try to tell my story through each song and im proud to share my culture with others. What I think sets me apart is my fluidity and wide. range of music, I love playing a deep cut people forgot about that feels nostalgic or an old school classic that brings people to the dance floor. I also play in multiple formats like DDJ/CDJ and vinyl.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
to those starting out I would say I’ve yourself grace and document your journey. every day you work at it is a day you can get better at your craft and it’s amazing to look back and reflect on your progress. What I wish I knew when I was just starting out as a DJ was that I don’t have to change my sound in fact the more authentic you are the more opportunities you’re bound to get hat are unique and for you.
