Rising Stars: Meet Alexandrea Gillary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandrea Gillary.

Hi Alexandrea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art has always been the primary focus of my life for as long as I can remember. I never had any other plan; I knew what I wanted to do, and I tried my darndest to accomplish it. I took every art class that I could possibly take in school, and all of my free time was spent doing something art related, from oil painting to digital design. I never really saw myself doing anything else; if I wasn’t doing art, then I wasn’t happy.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I definitely wouldn’t call the road easy. It’s taken an incredible amount of hard work to get me to where I am today. I’ve moved around a lot, I went to school to get a degree in Fine Arts (and after I brief hiatus, I went back to finish that art degree), and there were also a number of random jobs to help keep me afloat while I figured out my whole deal basically. I also started my career as an unpaid apprentice, so that was a whole challenge on its own.

With all that being said, I’ve also had a tremendous amount of love and support in my life to help get me to where I am today. It takes a lot to believe in yourself and trust that you are capable of accomplishing your dreams, but I’d be lying if I said I could have done it without the support of all the great people in my life.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a tattoo artist! Well, currently a tattoo apprentice. I like to say that I specialize in “cute stuff,” but I consider a lot of untraditional things cute! I adore using fun colors, lots of pinks and purples, but really, I love doing anything that makes people happy! There’s a lot that I’m proud of; honestly, every new tattoo that I get to do I’m proud of. I’m so grateful for every single person who sees my work online (or on someone they know!) and decides they want to get something done by me. It is an incredible feeling. There’s a lot of trusts that goes into getting a tattoo, and it feels so good knowing that there are people who have that trust in me.

I think my creativity sets me apart from others. I have a lot to learn and a lot of room to grow, but I’m really excited to see where my creativity can take me.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I always wonder about how the start of my career would have gone if it had started at a different time, but my apprenticeship actually started during the pandemic. It’s been a little weird, I mean, it’s a very sterile field of work anyways, but I bet there are a few differences now compared to what it used to be. In the grand scheme of things, the challenges are small. I love what I do and I’d do anything to continue this path (in a safe and healthy way).
