Meet Stephanie Adamson of Backyard Vacation Rentals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Adamson.

Hi Stephanie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial streak and love to be creative. It started with the typical lemonade stand, morphed into designing eye-catching flyers to advertise my babysitting services, and I even went through the flipping furniture stage. Now that I am a mother, I am always thinking of ways to celebrate childhood and making memories with my family. I didn’t grow up taking camping trips like my husband had, but I did ‘campout’ in my backyard as a child. This sparked my entrepreneurial mind, a way to bring together to two important aspects of my life and share it with others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I always loved the idea of Glamping and thought one day maybe I would own some land that I structured to use as a “glampsite.” There were many obstacles that stood in the way of that dream, including permitting water and sewer and clearing land. I’d spend many afternoons scrolling through Zillow to find the perfect plot of land, only to discover camping on the land was not permitted by the township. I had to reframe my thinking- how could I give the experience of glamping without the red tape of zoning and permits? The answer ended up being right in front of me. Bringing glamping right to your own backyard.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Backyard Vacation Rentals?
I had the idea for Backyard Vacation Rentals on a whim and dove in headfirst. I thought- instead of having a “glampsite”, why not deliver and set up a tent directly in your own backyard? I have many fond memories of my childhood camping in our backyard for a night. My dad would set up a little tent in our suburban backyard and my sister, and I would bring our collection of books and stuffed animals in for the night. The night was full of giggles, story-telling, and freedom. I wanted to re-create that for families but elevate the experience. Our business uses a premium, 200 sq ft canvas tent that is completely waterproof. We make the tent extra cozy with memory foam mattresses, quality linens and add the special touches like rugs, side tables, lanterns, greenery, and string lights. We offer the option to add on our movie package, which includes our movie projector, screen, and classic childhood DVDs, like The Sandlot and The Goonies.

What I love most is when I come back to take the tent down, and parents tell me how much fun the kids had, staying up late, eating too many smores, and enjoying a night under the stars. The magical moments of childhood are always worth creating.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Kenny Young from Pitched has a great e-book about starting a mobile glamping business. He was able to recommend his favorite quality products (such a long-lasting, rechargeable lanterns) and was a big help in starting our business.
