Meet Joe Sanok of Practice of the Practice, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Sanok.

Hi Joe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started out as a counselor who loved helping people but quickly realized that most therapists weren’t taught how to actually run a business. I was working full time at a community college, running a small private practice on the side, and burning out fast. I knew there had to be a better way to work—one that allowed for both impact and balance.

That’s when I started The Practice of the Practice Podcast in 2013. Through that, I interviewed top business leaders, learned better systems to run a private practice, and expanded my network. In doing this, I also positioned myself to consult with private practice owners.

In 2014, I left my full-time job to grow Mental Wellness Counseling and Practice of the Practice. As the consulting and podcasting grew, I saw a shift occurring in my interest. I saw the impact of helping thousands of therapists as the direction I was headed, so I sold Mental Wellness Counseling in 2019.

Over time, that Practice of the Practice turned into a community—thousands of clinicians who wanted to grow, scale, and even step beyond their practices into new ventures like podcasts, books, and consulting. I’ve been able to bring together my thoughts in the book Thursday is the New Friday (HarperCollins) which discusses the neuroscience of work and the four-day workweek. I’ve done a TEDx talk about how slowing down allows us to speed up and the podcast now has over 1,300 episodes and gets 60k-100k listens per month.

At the core of everything that Practice of the Practice does worldwide is that we help therapists build a thriving private practice they absolutely love! We want them to thrive, to have great systems, marketing, and strategic plan. But we want them to absolutely love the clients they work with while impact their community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the biggest obstacles have been trying to launch things that are beyond where my current audience is. We would try to launch a product for larger group practices, but then realized we didn’t have that listening audience.

We’ve been impressed with Practice of the Practice, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Practice of the Practice launched the first podcast on the business of private practice for counselors in 2013. Since then, it’s grown into one of the most trusted resources in the world for therapists who want to build, grow, and scale their businesses—without burning out or losing their sense of purpose.

We help therapists at every stage of their journey, from launching a solo practice to growing a thriving group practice and even expanding into podcasts, books, and courses. Through our flagship program, The Practice Academy, we bring together expert consulting, live trainings, community support, and proven systems to help practice owners reach their goals faster.

What sets us apart is that we blend business strategy with humanity. As a licensed therapist myself, I understand the heart behind this work—and I know that success in private practice isn’t just about marketing or systems, it’s about creating a business that supports the life you want to live.

Brand-wise, I’m proud that we’ve built something that represents both professionalism and play. Practice of the Practice stands for innovation, creativity, and balance. We help people find the freedom to make a bigger impact while actually enjoying the process.

At our core, we’re about empowering helpers to think like entrepreneurs, so they can do more of the work they’re called to do—and have the time and income to live fully while doing it.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’m a firstborn, raised by two first borns. I am the oldest of fifteen cousins. Everything that you would expect that comes with being firstborn has been true. For much of my life, achievement, structure, and success defined how I look at life. I had to deconstruct much of that to be able to find what healthy achievement looks like.

As a child, I had a unique blend of interests in arts, music, and the outdoors. Through scouting I achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. More than a rank or achievement, that helped form my leadership and practical life skills.

My personality has always been outgoing and friendly, but it took a while to find my true nature…maybe I’m still finding it?

I was raised by a school psychologist and nurse practitioner, so medical and mental health were assumed parts of our conversations.
