Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Barris.
Hi Jessica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Having graduated from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) in 2014, I accepted an internship in New York working as a product photographer for Helen Ficalora Jewelry. After the internship, I became the in-house photographer for The Betesh Group in New Jersey. In that position for two years, I decided to move back to Michigan in 2017 and became the in-house photographer for Resultco. My life took a major change in September of 2018 with the death of my father just five months after I got married. Our family was completely blindsided and not sure how to move forward. Both my parents were chefs, but my mother wasn’t sure she would ever bake again after my dad’s passing. With encouragement and backing from relatives, she decided to open a bakery. After much consideration, I decided to become my mother’s business partner in her first brick-and-mortar. Without any formal culinary training, I knew it would be a challenge, but I was ready, eager, and excited to become the other half of the Culinary Combo Bakery. With many obstacles due to covid, we finally opened our doors on October 27, 2020.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Covid has created many obstacles and challenges for our business. When we first opened, covid prevented us from having guests dine in our bakery. We also faced struggles when it came to purchasing ingredients and supplies. Currently, the increase in costs is making it very difficult for us to achieve any sort of profit.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Culinary Combo Bakery?
Whether you stop by to pick up a treat to go or decide to enjoy your pastry in the bakery with a cup of freshly brewed La Colombe coffee, the primary goal of The Culinary Combo Bakery will always be customer service. Special requests don’t frighten us because we strive to meet our customer’s needs while never compromising on quality. We pride ourselves on being creative, innovative, and unique. Our variety of items is always changing, and we continue to challenge our creativity daily. Using only fresh ingredients in everything we make, our goal is to leave the customer wanting more.
What are your plans for the future?
My hope for the future is to offer baking classes as well as host private events.
