Today we’d like to introduce you to Forming Function Podcast.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Ultimately, Forming Function is the product of a Covid-era lawn happy hour. Brian was talking about his idea for a podcast that he had been noodling on since 2015, when returning to Detroit after working as an architect for Walt Disney World park and resorts. He was inspired by their process, which starts every design with a story. These stories could be pages upon pages of content for something as small as a one-room retail shop. As a guest, these story elements were not always immediately evident but the story informed the design of the space in every aspect, down to the light fixtures or the specific tiles on the walls. He found that aspect so interesting and it led him to want to find a way to unveil the same kind of stories behind the everyday designs of the real world.
Also at this formative lawn happy hour was Brian’s coworker-turned-pal, Sam – a non-designer (marketer) working in the architecture field. In discussing Brian’s podcast idea, she suggested he find a co-host, a layman who could ask questions that listeners might have throughout a story and help translate design jargon for a broader audience. As a historic preservationist and aspiring quipster, Sam seemed like a natural fit. From there, she became Brian’s accomplice in building on his idea – establishing a format, name, and brand.
When we later applied for and were granted funds from the Michigan Architectural Foundation, it was real. To receive the grant, we had to outline how the funds would be used. This resulted in a production plan that we began delivering on.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
“Struggle” may be too strong of a word, but we have learned a lot along the way. And we know we have only scratched the surface. We’ve had a lot to learn about recording and editing audio. We’re also constantly pushing ourselves to become better storytellers, and build episodes that are dimensional and entertaining but also eye-opening.
But the biggest hurdle was just getting started. Finding that motivation and taking the first steps can feel like a leap into the unknown. But once you have your momentum, it is easier to keep up.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Forming Function is a Detroit-based podcast that delves into the intriguing stories behind
everyday places and objects, revealing the thought and purpose behind their design. We are focused on engaging, educational, and often humorous storytelling that is geared toward everyone curious about how design impacts our daily lives, not just design professionals.
Our podcast is focused on approachable conversations dissecting the design development of everyday objects and places – things you might wonder about in passing but maybe forget you were wondering about it before finding the answer.
What sets us apart from most of the others is that we are crafting narrative stories about design, rather than an interview format.
How do you think about happiness?
Sam: Creating is probably what makes me happiest. Especially when it’s something like this podcast or artwork where you have something to show for your effort at the end, that you can look at later to improve on or draw inspiration from. That, and my cats 🙂
Brian: I’m a major extrovert so I love going out with friends, having some good food, and doing bar trivia. For the podcast, I get really excited with moments of surprise – the unexpected stories or guests that add a richness to our stories.
