Meet Dan Cylkowski

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Cylkowski.

Hi Dan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off DJing weddings just out of high school. I did that for ten years. During that time, I helped out at a local radio station 93.1 WDRQ. My name on there was “SupermanDAN”. Towards the end of the ten-year mark DJing weddings, I started to get burned out from that, for multiple reasons. I then started learning film and going out as a “second shooter” and learning how to edit. After about three years of editing and going out as the “second shooter” I started my own company (Daniel Nicholas Films) and I have now been doing that for just about ten years! Every weekend is new and different! Meeting great couples and spending it with them and their families is very fulfilling! Creating a wedding film from their day and incorporating their love story truly is a beautiful task. From starting off from a kid DJing weddings and having fun on the radio, to now, a clear and direct career path that allows me to film weddings here in Michigan, Florida, Texas, and a couple other states is probably the best job in the world!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Hasn’t always been a smooth road- I’ve had a lot of business growing pains learning what to charge, how to structure my business and how to put a story together! Luckily, I’ve had some great mentors and other business professionals to lean on and ask questions!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a wedding filmmaker. I’m entrusted by great couples across the country to capture some of their biggest memories on their “special day” and create a beautiful wedding story for them to pass down to generation to generation. It really is a family heirloom that I help to create!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
How I got my nickname “Superman”… I was swimming in my grandparent’s apartment pool, and I was around seven I think. There was this little girl who was younger than me that had “water wings on“.

Hahaha, maybe she was flirting, maybe she was trying to show off, but she ended up taking her water wings off and tried to swim. Unfortunately, I don’t think she was that strong of a swimmer because when she attempted to swim without her water wings on she couldn’t stay afloat. I swam over to her, she grabbed onto me, and I swam her over to the side of the pool to where her grandmother helped get her out. Then The little girls grandmother then proceeded to tell me, “You saved her, you saved her just like Superman!“ And that’s how my nickname started.
