Meet Brandon Smith of Star Factory Artist Development

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Smith.

Hi Brandon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started as a producer/songwriter who decided the best way to my name out there was to create a hit list of all the local artists I wanted to work and offer my talents for free. This really helped propel my name and allowed me opportunity to work with many artists around Metro Detroit.

I quickly realized that we had major talent here, yet the opportunities for growth as an artist were slim to none. It was at that moment that I almost felt offended that Detroit had such rich musical and executive musical history, but the remnants of that resembled an entertainment ghost town. At the time, I couldn’t comprehend why Motown would just up and leave Detroit like they did.

I decided to study the artist development system that Motown put in place, and that I would have to be the one to bring artist development back into Detroit.

One day I got fired from my job and decided it was now or never. Star Factory was born 45 days later. I had no business plan and no money, but I did have an undeniable passion and mission mindset to offer this city something that it so desperately deserves.

Month after month, I was barely surviving, but as each new client came through my doors, I could see the impact that was being made. My purpose and passion began to grow deeper and deeper. So much so that I was forced to make a very tough decision.

I had been writing with Trey Songz on this Ready album, but the only way for me to gain real traction as a songwriter, was for me to move to ATL. I super struggled with this decision because my dream as a songwriter was finally coming true, but deep down, I knew my purpose was to keep Star Factory alive in Detroit. I chose my purpose.

I never looked back.

Over the last 15 years, I’ve been able to help transform thousands of artists into marketable commodities in the entertainment marketplace. Some of the more notable names are LaBritney, Big Sean, Tee Grizzley, Neisha Neshae, Shana Wilson, Diamond White, Mike Posner, RayGiftedKeys, Kynzi & Brielle Lesley.

My passion for the talented youth of our city has led me to become the Program Director for Adidas Sound Labs, where I write curriculum and operate a program for the students to create mini-music industry within their school. I am currently in the works of implementing this program into several other organizations and schools, willing to build recording studios in their facility.

My most recent venture is starting a new division under my umbrella called Star Factory Management Group. This entity serves as virtual management company that consults artists all over the country on their artist development, branding, marketing, and promotional campaigns.

I’m always working on creating innovative ways to educate, train and produce the next star. This is what led me to create Thee Ultimate Artist Development Pack, which is a digital course of all my proprietary artist development training methods wrapped into one amazing experience that includes Vocal Training, Performance Coaching, Songwriting, Branding, Content, and more.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A big challenge I faced early on was staying afloat financially. I can attribute this to a bigger challenge of not having any brand awareness and offering something called “artist development” that no one knew they really needed.

The other challenge I faced was finding balance between having one leg in the music industry and another in the service industry. This led me on a tireless grind, with very little sleep, trying to put my best foot forward in both industries.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people don’t realize how extra dope our recording studio is and the sound quality that comes from it. We pride ourselves on hiring vocal producers first, meaning, we rather have a vocal producer that can be trained to engineer, as opposed to an engineer who must be trained to vocal produce.

Vocal production is a key element to the studio recording experience in pulling the best performance out of a recording artist, from their lead vocal to backgrounds, to harmony arrangements.
