Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Shumake.
Alisha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Owning my own business has been a goal of mine since I was 12 years old. Back then, I had my sights set on opening up a record store. Obviously, it’s a good thing that did not pan out as music has gone in a very different direction but my goal stayed the same. When I got to college, I majored in Small Business Management. I completed my Associates and was set to continue down the path to my Bachelors when I had a change of heart. I was bored. The thought of more business classes gearing me towards a career in a corporate environment was disheartening. I knew I wanted to work towards entrepreneurship and just needed to fine-tune exactly what that would be.
To really narrow down my options, I sat down and thought really hard about my interests and hobbies. Was there something I could take from a hobby and turn into a successful and happy career? After some thought, I landed on makeup. Ever since I was a little girl I was really into makeup and that didn’t change through my teens and early 20s. After some research, I discovered Esthetics and things really fell into place from there. I quickly signed up for an Esthetics program at a local school and within four months I was ready to begin this new career. While makeup may have been the catalyst for this decision, I quickly grew to love skincare. I began working in the industry immediately and haven’t looked back.
I’ve worked in many different environments throughout my almost 15-year career – sales, salons, and day spas but most of my background is in medical esthetics. I was happy being an employee in each of these settings until one day, I wasn’t. In 2018, I started thinking more about going solo and realizing this goal of entrepreneurship. When 2019 rolled around I gave myself that year for planning and would decide at the end of the year if I was truly ready to make this jump. I measured every metric, keeping diligent track of every aspect of my days. I read books, listened to industry-specific podcasts, and jotted down ideas. At the end of 2019, I added up my metrics, weighed all my options and the decision was clear: I was ready to do this. I trusted in myself, in my skills, and my determination to give this dream of my ago.
At the beginning of 2020, I did it. I quit my job and went solo, creating The More You Glow Skin & Beauty. Then COVID hit. No amount of planning could have prepared me for a pandemic but I had no choice but to roll with it. I decided to take on training that I had been thinking about for years – Oncology Esthetics. This was something very near and dear to my heart and I suddenly found myself with the time I needed to dedicate to this certification. In my mind, as much as COVID had derailed my original plans, it didn’t knock me down. I was able to pivot and turn that time into something positive.
In June of 2020, salons and spas were able to re-open and welcome clients back in. With a few more pivots, I was set up in a great environment and began offering treatments again. I am so fortunate to be able to say that business has grown steadily over these past two years. With hard work, determination, and the usual blood, sweat, and tears of an entrepreneur The More You Glow continue to thrive. I continuously learn more about my industry, about business, and I am so happy because of it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road but I never expected it to be. I’m a firm believer that anything worth having is not easily earned. It takes dedication, motivation, and determination. There have been a number of struggles that I have had to navigate, COVID being the biggest. I had just barely gotten set up when suddenly, everything came to a halt. There was so much uncertainty during those first few months but I never once thought that this was over before it had even begun. I had already put so much work into preparing for this endeavor that it was simply not an option to give up. Once salons and spas were able to re-open, I had to pivot to find a new location, acquire all the PPE supplies needed and ensure that I had everything needed to get The More You Glow up and running.
In addition to COVID, there are personal struggles that I didn’t see in all my planning. I feel that entrepreneurship isn’t just business, it’s personal too. For instance, mindset is a struggle. For my entire career, I was in “hustle and grow” mode. Once business built to a certain point, I found myself needing to adopt a “hustle, maintain/manage while still growing” mode. That was and is not easy. A business owner needs to grow along with their business and that is not always the simplest task. With that being said though, I still love it. This journey has taught me so much about myself. I’ve seen what I am capable of, how I can elevate my skills, and how I can create a happy and successful life for myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a licensed esthetician and have been practicing since 2007. I specialize in customized skincare treatments with a focus on age management and prevention. In addition to skin treatments, I also offer lash, tinting, and waxing services. I pride myself on staying up to date in a rapidly expanding industry and education is a top priority for me. I strive to continue learning the latest and greatest and pass that knowledge along to my clients, whether that be treatment information or product knowledge.
I operate with honesty and integrity. It is important to me to always be open and honest with clients. I will never steer a client wrong or recommend a treatment or product that will not achieve their goals. The trust clients have in me is not something I take lightly. I have always felt that esthetics is more than the surface of the skin, it goes beyond that. It makes my day when a client leaves a treatment feeling confident in their own skin and that is my goal for every appointment I walk into.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I like to think my passion and love for my career come across but it is not only about the business side of things that is fulfilling. I truly love working with people. I get to meet new people all the time and I get to know these amazing people and learn from them. I get to experience the highs and lows of life with them. That truly is the best part of what I do.
