Life & Work with Seth Ortega

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Ortega.

Hi Seth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I always had a passion for photography! I started a small business on the side and would do senior pictures, weddings, and sometimes just make something creative to photograph using a model fake hair fake nails crazy makeup, etc. I loved getting creative and wanted to expand myself. I thought to myself “what if I got licensed for hair and makeup” not only could I set myself apart from other photographers I could have full credit for what’s behind and in front of the photo. I did some research and found a very reputable academy called “Toni&guy” located in Toledo Ohio (name since changed to Salon institute Toledo). after I graduated cosmetology school I moved back to Lansing and started my career behind the chair with zero clientele base. Fast forward 10 years I have been with ulta the last 7-8 years and I have the freedom to just create art on new clients constantly. I am technically an employee… but in the hair industry… although it’s not “my own” salon. It is my reputation my furthering education and my passion that helps me exceed. The salon at ULTA Beauty gives me the opportunity and tools to grow MY business behind the chair and guess what… I get paid vacation time hehehe.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the hair industry, it is never a smooth road. From day one you have to build your clientele 1 by 1. Over the years you will lose clients and gain some. The only way to build a successful business is to give your all into every client. Your business requires constant communication with clients. My biggest struggle was and still is having a work-life balance. This isn’t a clock in work… clock out go home and relax. After a long week of creating… sometimes it’s hard to turn off our self-criticism. Could I have performed better on that service? Was that client really happy? Is the client still going to love her hair tomorrow?

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in color corrections, lived-in natural highlights, and creative hair colors! I am known for maintaining healthy hair during these sometimes-lengthy appointments. What sets me apart from others is that the person in my chair isn’t just a client. This is a person who is putting their faith and trust in me to give them a look and service. I pride myself in doing my best for each person. I perform a consultation before any appointment starts and I address any possible hiccups that may occur during the appointment due to previous hair coloring history that could affect the desired end result.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is when my mom asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up… I was so young and my only response was “mom… I just want to be happy”
