Life & Work with Melise Hill of Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melise Hill.

Melise Hill

Melise, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My career as an artist started as a child, always drawing and creating things. As I got older, wanting to take art more seriously, I studied Fine Arts in college, with a focus on drawing and painting. Unsure of my next move after graduation, I enrolled in a Post Grad Special Effects Makeup program near Toronto. Although I ended up not enjoying school, it was being in the big city where I saw the potential that tattooing as a career offered. I moved home with the goal of finding an apprenticeship. Kris Kani, an artist in my hometown was willing to take me on, so I learned under him for the next couple of years. I moved to the US in 2015 and began working at Ironclad Tattoo Co. in metro Detroit for the better part of seven years. During that period, I made a lot of connections, and grew as an artist. At that point, I felt it was time to make my next move, so I opened my own private studio in Detroit, which is where I work today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve been fortunate to have not faced any major obstacles during my career. I’ve been surrounded by great, supportive people who have helped to shape the outcome of my career. I’ve always been one who, if I decide I want to do something, I will figure out the steps required to get there, and won’t be stopped until I do, not paying much mind to outside factors that could slow me down. I’m a strong believer that if you set out with the right intentions, you will find your way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in full colour, illustrative tattooing. My work often features women’s faces and elements of nature in a style heavily influenced by the movement and composition of Art Nouveau. Clients seek me out specifically for this style that I’ve developed over the last 12 years. I have been more recently focusing on large scale projects, such as full backs and sleeves. Incorporating the dimensions of the body adds another element specific the medium of tattooing. I think my painterly application, recognizable faces and consistent palette allows my work to stand out.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think there is this idea that people in my industry live an exciting, rock star lifestyle, but this isn’t true for me … at least not anymore!
