Life & Work with Madison Richards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Richards.

Hi Madison, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up I was always fascinated by photographs and capturing a moment you can always look back on. Some of my favorite memories from my childhood is looking through photos my parents had printed in albums of family and friends and my siblings and I growing up. I would take photos on my mom’s digital camera, and when cellphone became a thing for me in middle school, you better believe I had all the flip phone photos I could get, eventually my phone upgraded to android with a better camera, I would do photo shoots of friends and family. (What I thought was professional at the time and ripe age of 14) I eventually got an iPhone and would use that until  I could finally afford a REAL camera. During the pandemic, I had time to really be creative and was fortunate enough to book clients and from there I built a portfolio and found my style. My passion for capturing beautiful moments in time and precious memories for people is something so magical to me and I feel blessed every day for this talent. It allows me to be creative and enjoy what I do! My now 3-year-old son has also taken a love to taking photos and is adventuring with me to get nature shots in our beautiful town! It’s been an incredible experience to have with him!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the hardest struggle for me personally was having confidence in myself and work. I found it extremely hard, mostly during the Pandemic era to get past my anxiety with meeting with clients I’ve never met before. I have high functioning anxiety and often times it would get the best of me. So, learning to get past that and have the confidence in what I do and be able to direct a complete stranger while making them feel confident and comfortable took a lot of practice!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think with my photography, I lean more to the engagement photos more than anything! There is something so pure and magical about love and capturing those moments when two people have committed to a lifetime together! I also really love nature photography, specifically sunsets and beach photos. I love traveling and taking in the beauty the world has to offer so capturing those moments to have forever and share with the world is something I thoroughly enjoy doing!

I’m most proud of my St Thomas USVI photos/blog. I gained a lot of traction and got to work with several locals and learn the rich and beautiful history the islands have to offer! I also got to help several strangers plan their dream vacation through my blog and talk with so many people from around the world! It was truly an amazing experience!

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think taking risks is 100% based on where you are at in life and how confident you are in trusting your mind and heart. I recently took a huge risk, moving to a town where I have no friends, and no clients, just a few family members and my son. While it’s been difficult gaining a clientele base, I’ve found a deeper appreciation for nature photography, as well as traveled more and been able to share learning moments with my son in regards to photography and his newfound love for it! I’ve even passed down my first camera to him! I think having the confidence in myself and trusting the process was the biggest factor in taking this risk, I learned more about myself and took time to create my blog and it’s been so successful for me personally just being able to interact with people from around the world! I can honestly say I’ve never been happier and more thankful I took the risk!
