Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyric Crocker.
Hi Lyric, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved crocheting. I started around 13 as just a way to kill time. The more I learned about it the more I fell in love with it. Over the years it became a hobby that I would constantly put down and pick back up. I still loved it, but I didn’t have a direction for it. Then the pandemic hit in 2020 and once again I decided to crochet to help me pass the time. The more I brushed up on my skills the more I noticed that people were interested in buying my clothing. Over a period of a couple months a had developed a decent amount of clientele and had a small following on Instagram. I did my first fashion show in August of 2020 for a friend of mine in “The New Wave” show. After my debut, everything has been amazing. I’ve met so many great people and none of it would have happened if I didn’t pick up my hook. I’ve worked so hard to get where I am but I plan on working harder to get to where I want to be.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In no way shape or form had it been easy. Crochet is a trend right now and so many people do it. The key is finding something that you’re good at making and stick with it. Now don’t get me wrong explore everything you can within your talent and use it to its full potential, but when just starting out try to separate yourself from people doing the same as you. Also, something to help is having people that actually do the same thing as you and see what works for them and what doesn’t. I’m lucky enough to know a lot of crocheters that are open-minded and ok with sharing ideas and learning from each other. I don’t know how I would make it without them.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a professional crocheter. My business Hooked On Lyric, LLC will officially be 3 next year. I specialize in crochet fashion and accessories. So, anything from loungewear to club wear and everything In-between. I’m mainly known for my bubbly personality and my custom work. I typically get full body measurements when I’m making pieces so that they can fit your body specifically. Something I’m most proud of with my work is the ability to adapt to any theme or idea that someone gives me even if it isn’t crochet, I can make it crochet and make it wonderful. I think what sets me apart from other designers is that everything I do is completely by hand. Yes, I have a pattern to follow but every stitch is unique and different not every piece is the same even if they may look similar.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising that not a lot of people that I work with know is that even though it was always my dream to become a designer I use to be a local MUA in Detroit and that I’m also enrolled in school currently to obtain my licensing in esthetics. I graduate in December of this year.
