Life & Work with Chase Klinesteker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chase Klinesteker.

Hi Chase, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I am a retired dentist. My daughter had encouraged me to write a family history by giving me a “grandfather book” filled with questions about me and our family, which I did not complete. At one point I tried to remember the wonderful stories that my father had told me about his life on the farm, but couldn’t recall any details. Then I started writing a few short articles about our family history and commonsense advice about life, which blossomed into many articles written for our 2 lovely granddaughters. Posting some of them on Facebook brought positive responses, and a book was planned. This was my first book (“Stories and Reflections”). I feel that it has a valuable message that could benefit other people about common sense living and the importance of leaving a lasting legacy.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been an enjoyable road. I was helped greatly by our son-in-law who is a graphic artist who helped me self-publish the book on Amazon. My mother was an English teacher, which gave me a decent foundation for writing. I have written many articles in the past about the tropical fish hobby and fishing instruction, and I have a website and U-Tube channel that have helped give me experience. The hardest part for me in writing is getting the wording just right, and I repeatedly go over the wording before finishing. Researching your own past is fun. Computer word processors are a godsend, as they help with grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I retired from dentistry in 2008 after practicing for 43 years. I feel that interests and hobbies add an important dimension to life. It seems that most of the interests that I had, I got carried away with. My interest in breeding tropical fish resulted in my recording over 570 spawns, at one point the most in the nation. I obtained the title of “Grand Master” for breeding fish and received the Legacy Award of the Grand Valley Aquarium Club. A video tour of my fish room became quite popular on U-Tube. My interest in fishing allowed me to become a Certified Spoon plugging Instructor and have a close friendship with Buck Perry, the “Father of Structure Fishing.” My U-Tube channel contains numerous videos that I took on the water fishing experiences and instructions. My interest in the sport of table tennis eventually allowed me to obtain, in 2015, the Michigan State Championship in the “Veterans over 70” category. For years I strongly supported water fluoridation and wrote many articles and gave presentations at meetings and the American Dental Association. My proudest award was the “Silent Bell Award” presented to me by the West Michigan District Dental Society of my professional peers. Currently, I am enjoying writing more articles for our granddaughters and promoting “Stories and Reflections” because I feel that it has an important message for both youth and adults. My website ( covers the dual subjects of breeding tropical fish and Spoon plugging instruction.

What makes you happy?
Helping others. I especially like to teach or tell others about what I have learned from life, hobbies, and experiences. Passing on knowledge can help others save time, money, and aggravation, as well as help them attain goals. One article in my book refers to having a sense of humor to boost your happiness level. Controlling negative thinking is a step in the right direction. I am happy at winning a table tennis game and attaining goals I have set, but happiness requires continuous attention. I define it as the absence of negative thinking. One article in my book is titled “Happiness, Sense of humor.” One of my biggest pleasures is to take children or beginning adults fishing and help them catch their biggest fish ever!
