Life & Work with Dr. Brad Fahlman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Brad Fahlman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am originally from a farming community in Saskatchewan, Canada & grew up with an interest in sports and photography. After high school, I decided to follow academic pursuits, obtaining undergraduate and graduate (Ph.D.) degrees in Chemistry. After a 2-yr postdoctoral appointment at the University of California, Irvine, I took a faculty job at Central Michigan University in July, 2002, where I currently teach and perform research related to materials for rechargeable batteries. However, over the recent years, I have revisited my passion for photography and started a side business “SkyView Productions, Michigan” in 2018. My wife is a realtor, so I originally just assisted her with photography of home/land listings. However, I now provide photography and videography services to a wide variety of customers for real estate, as well as sporting and special events.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have been blessed to have collaborated with extremely talented students and postdoctoral researchers at Central Michigan University. Their dedication and productivity over the years resulted in securing extremely fast tenure and promotion in the Dept of Chemistry, as well as a variety of research and teaching awards. Since photography is such an expensive endeavor, I was glad to have an established career to be able to afford the top-quality camera bodies, lenses, drones, and other equipment that I now am fortunate to use. However, as a relatively new sports photographer, it is difficult to get access to professional sporting events with professional lenses unless you are an active member of a media organization. I am currently struggling to get the right contacts to enable access to professional events; although I do not wish to take the job of current photographers, it would be nice to work alongside these experts as an intern or volunteer to improve my photography skills and capture some amazing action shots.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As an FAA-licensed remote pilot, Matterport service provider, and Sony Professional, we are able to offer a diverse selection of photography and videography services. We are the #1 service provider for drone photography/videography in mid-Michigan but have also performed services across the state and around the U.S. and Canada. Our level of equipment and training, as well as attention to detail and communication with the client at every step of the project, sets us apart from the others in this field.
