Life & Work with Austin Scott of Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Scott

Hi Austin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My Name is Austin Scott, I’m 20 years old, and I’m from St. Clair Shores, Michigan, about 25 minutes from downtown Detroit. For as long as I can remember Ive been super creative. I’ve dabbled in many different art forms such as drawing, painting, photography, fashion design, hairstyling, and many more! I’ve been doing hair for as long as I can remember! I started by learning out to braid. Growing up Id always braid my friends’ hair! Before I was of age to go to cosmetology school, I was so certain that hair coloring would be what I was going to be specializing in. Once I began cosmetology school in 2022 at Douglas J Aveda in Royal Oak, I quickly realized that color wasnt going to be my main interest anymore. I developed a love for styling hair. Not just your everyday styles though, I fell in love with high fashion/editorial styling. I had the amazing opportunity to join my teacher, Renee Suban, at Douglas J. Aveda on a trip to work along side Aveda’s New York Fashion Week runway styling team. I worked on 3 different shows in the F/W 2023 season, one being FOO + FOO, and got to work along side 2024 Model of the Year: Alex Consani. The following July, I began working at Figo Salon in Birmingham where I assisted many talented stylists, and began my training with the phenomenal program Figo offers. While working there, I began assisting Ashna Jeberaeel, who is extremely talented! She and I share a passion for editorial styling, so she took me with her to what would be my first photoshoot that I had involvement in! She taught me so many tips and tricks on things I do today! The following September, I completed my second season of NYFW runway styling with the Aveda team, this time working on 5 shows. My time in New York during fashion week heavily inspired me to get into modeling. I began modeling in photoshoots for Haus of Raya, and other local companies! Once I returned from my second season, I began doing hair for a sustainable couture fashion haus called Haus of Raya. Through working with Raya I developed many cherished connections and began doing hair for photoshoots regularly. In April of 2024 I decided to part ways with Figo Salon, and tap more into my creative side. Raya Sacco, owner of Haus of Raya, offered to teach me how to sew, and design a collection with her because I expressed my dream to design clothes. In summer of 2024, I designed my first collection with the Haus, presenting it in our Haus of Raya season 003 t-skirt fashion show at the end of summer. In July of 2024 I was asked to be the Hair team lead for Urban Pulse’s fashion show. I put together an amazing team of talented hairstylists and makeup artists, and we killed so many looks! Later in the month of August, I began assisting Pasha Knight at 6 Salon in Detroit. As I mentioned before i have a love for braiding, and Pasha is a braider so we were a perfect match! I continued my hairstyling education with her and she taught me how to correctly execute box braids, stitch braids, etc. While working with Pasha and Haus of Raya, my dear friend Olivia Hanson and I decided to produce a fashion show ourselves! We called it The Vortex. We brought together 8 local designers, 40 models, djs, photographers, and detroits best painters, all in one night hosted at Exodos in Detroit. We wanted to give local artists, and our hair team a chance to shine, and bring the Detroit creative scene together as a whole. And we did just that! Our vision came to life after selling over 160 tickets! We’re currently working on our next show, and can’t wait to bring the community together for another amazing night!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say its been a pretty smooth journey so far! Ive had a few hiccups along the way! For example, I was accepted into a cosmetology school program in high school and was going to start my junior year of high school, but unfortunately the program was canceled due to covid. I truly believe everything happens for a reason because if that program didnt happen, I wouldnt have alot of the things under my name that i do today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I wouldnt say I specialize in one type of art. I love change when it comes to things im doing! I love painting, drawing, making clothes, printmaking, etc! I love creating all different kinds of art, and expressing myself through it. Publicy, I’m definitely more known for doing hair, designing clothes, and styling them! Im most proud of the runway collection Raya and I created, my Crash by Charli xcx album cover painting, and my Doja Cat painting. I think what sets me apart from others is my versatility. I’m very innovative and creative, which allows me to think fast and fix/change/make things very quickly and easily because i have dabbled in so many different forms of art. I credit my High school art teacher, Sharada Sharp, for encouraging and helping be build confidence in my creative mind.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Be patient, everything happens for a reason, and youre exactly where youre supposed to be in life right now.
