Inspiring Conversations with Sydney Plaskey of Sunny’s on the Corner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Plaskey

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Sydney Plaskey. I grew up about 20 minutes away from Brighton in Northville Michigan. I went to Hillsdale College in Michigan and then continued on to work for a marketing company for seven years after graduating college. While I loved working in marketing, I always knew that I wanted to start my own business. My husband Jimmie Plaskey works in downtown Brighton and saw this beautiful boutique space available. I am so lucky to have such a supportive husband who pushed me to follow my dream and open the boutique in this spot. It’s a beautiful spot right in the middle of Main Street with huge windows and I knew I did not want to pass it up. With no retail background whatsoever, I opened Sunnys on the corner in 2022. I self-taught myself the business from the ground up. It has been so challenging and rewarding to own my own business. Now I have a daughter which brings a whole new set of challenges, but also fun to the business (especially because we sell baby items as well).

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any business ,we have had our ups and downs. Brighton is an amazing place to work with such a supportive community. The business owners downtown work together a lot to overcome any obstacles we have in the community and also celebrate our beautiful downtown. There was a massive construction project in 2023 where all of downtown was revamped. It was a tough year for all of us with construction, however, the outcome was worth it. We now have a more modern downtown which is more conducive for large events and festivals.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sunny’s on the Corner?
Sunnys on the corner is a boutique in the heart of downtown Brighton, however, we also have a full online store that’s open 24/7 as well. Mainly, we sell women’s clothing and accessories. We have a lot of bright colors and the softest fabrics. We also have a large section of toddler and baby clothes. Our most popular item in this section is an array of bamboo pajamas for babies. Another fan favorite is our local sports section. In the local sports section, we carry a lot of unique Detroit Lions gear (especially this year) along with other local teams. I go to buying shows all over the country a few times a year to specifically curate items that I love. I don’t put any boundaries on what we carry in the store, however, I do have some favorite brands that I work with. Overall, I buy what I like. Over time, I’m finding out more and more about what our customer in Brighton likes. As time goes on, I’m slowly honing in on the type of product that I can bring to our community to fill any gap that’s needed!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think most people would be surprised to know that i started this business when i was only 28 years old. There aren’t many boutique owners that i have met with such an early start. I think this brings an edge to the products that we carry!

Secondly, many people do not know that we have a full online store of everything we carry in store. SunnysontheCorner.com is always open! People can pick up orders in store or have them delivered straight to their home.
