Inspiring Conversations with Harmanjit Jalf of Sahar Creation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harmanjit Jalf.

Hi Harmanjit, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In 2001 I got married and moved to the US from India with my husband. The first few years were all about getting acclimatized to the American culture. I always had two passions- teaching and fashion. I chose to pursue teaching and so fashion took a back seat. I never got an opportunity to go to an actual fashion school however I enjoyed designing my own personal outfits. I would look at magazines and celebrities and ask my mom to sew a similar outfit for me. In 2014, my sister suggested that now that I was all settled and my son was independent, we should start thinking about opening our own business. In November 2014 We started our business Sahar Creations from my living room. The name Sahar comes from my sister’s name and my name- SA from Sarbjit (older sister) and HAR from Harmanjit (that’s me). Initially, we wanted to test the waters before we actually invested a bigger amount. we designed a few outfits and the rest we procured from other vendors, we received an amazing response to our designs and decided to stop reselling and solely concentrate on designing and creating our own outfits. I used to participate in a lot of exhibitions and events just to get our name out, but in a short time only solely by word of mouth we created a niche for our brand. My sister takes care of all the backend stuff and I take care of the front end. Clients associate quality and class with SAHAR and we are very happy and proud of that.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When you start any work, you will always find roadblocks. I wouldn’t say it was a smooth ride but it wasn’t a struggle either. Initially creating a place for myself in the market was the biggest struggle. Once people saw my work and felt comfortable working with me then it was a smooth ride.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a designer specializing in tailor-made customized Indian traditional clothing. I am known for the personalized shopping experience I provide to my clients. They feel comfortable walking into my store and discussing with me their needs and do not feel pressurized to buy if they are not ready. What sets me apart is the timeless pieces I create, to give more value for the client’s money by not being able to wear their outfit only once but be able to wear it multiple times. I am proud of the different styles I create, and the quality I provide my clients.

We provide customized tailor-made Bridal, Partywear, and semi-casual wear for both men and women. We take clients by appointment only and provide free shipping within US and alteration services for outfits bought from us.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Build a culture, not a company. Leaders who constantly focus on their core values and make every decision with them in mind find that everything is a little easier. If you hire, fire, review, reward, and recognize every person around your core values, the rest takes care of itself. You’ll have more fun and get more done.
