Hidden Gems: Meet Naddine Ahmad of Blüm Floral and Events

Today we’d like to introduce you to Naddine Ahmad.

Hi Naddine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Blüm began in February 2018 as a vision to create a space for social floral design workshops within the Detroit Metro Area. The idea sparked from the realization that more and more people are interested in experiences over retail; I knew that to help my vision take off, I would need to gain the trust of clients as a unique and fresh new florist.

I launch Blüm Floral on February 7, 2018, with a simple Instagram post, and within five days, we had received over 30 Valentine’s Day orders. Slowly, words of mouth spread, and my list of clients and demand grew larger. We became a retail florist without meaning to be.

In June 2018, two dear friends were getting married and asked us to be their wedding florist. We agreed, and slowly our name grew within the wedding industry. Their vote of confidence and incredible word of mouth lead Blüm to become an event florist.

Through early 2020, Blüm was creating dozens of weddings a year, but with the COVID-19 pandemic, we received a massive demand to assist with event planning. Our couples were maneuvering around the chaos of a pandemic and didn’t know how to continue planning their events with ever-changing guidelines, capacities, and closures. Our team began full-service planning along with full-service event florals. We completed 2020 more successfully than we had projected prior to the pandemic.

2021 was a successful year as well and lead to a pivotal moment for Blüm. Our company had outgrown the small studio build-out in my basement, and an expansion was necessary. We closed out 2021 by finding the perfect boutique/studio space.

In March 2022, we opened our studio in Ferndale, MI. The choice to move into a larger space meant the capability to take on more frequent events and larger ones as well. It also meant something important for our initial vision. It meant that we would have a space to host floral design workshops. We hosted workshops in other facilities in the past. But having our own space made it much simpler and so much more satisfying!

We now provide full event floral design, full-service event planning, event styling, and (public or private) floral design workshops. Beginning in October 2022, Blüm will also begin selling house plants.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve found that there’s no such thing as a smooth road as an entrepreneur. In my experience, even the best-planned strategies have unexpected twists and turns along the way; what I’ve learned is to be prepared for what’s around the corner, and always have a backup plan.

Some struggles we’ve faced:

-Hard time finding more employees

-Knowing when to grow out of a space

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Blüm is a boutique floral and event planning studio based in Ferndale, Michigan. Since launching in 2018, Blüm has been committed to creating unique events for all. The Blüm team prides themselves on getting to know each client and using innovative, hands-on strategies to ensure that every event is different from the last. Whether is it classic elegance, over-the-top color, or simplicity at its best.

We have never repeated the same experience twice and continue to strive to stand out as a unique design space.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
We learned to pivot to the needs of our clients. Following what they need is what will drive your business to the next level. Without COVID, we aren’t sure that our brand would have expanded to what it is now. By listening to the request to become event planners, we allowed ourselves to grow into the next phase of what Blüm could be.
