Hidden Gems: Meet Morro Hernandez of Aztec Ink Tattoos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morro Hernandez.

Morro, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I go by Morro and I’m a tattoo artist here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I always knew I would be an artist someday; I’ve had a passion for art since I was a young boy. I started tattooing when I was 17 years old. My journey wasn’t easy, but I never gave up. I would draw every day, and that eventually led me in the tattoo industry. I had friends that liked my art and would let me tattoo on them, and slowly I started building a clientele. One day I took the greatest risk of my life and opened a tattoo studio called “Aztec Ink Tattoos.” That decision changed my entire life because now I can say that I am a successful business owner. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a number of incredible projects that have allowed me to grow and establish myself within this competitive industry. I’ve always loved being in a tattoo studio but owning one gave me a different perspective on life. I have never regretted that risk I took 6 years ago. From tattooing at houses to now traveling to different US states to tattoo at conventions, I can honestly say I have grown so much in this industry. As a tattoo artist, I’ve met thousands of different people, heard their stories, became a part of their life, listened to their experiences, and learned from their mistakes. I’m pretty sure that I have inspired a lot of people and encouraged them to take risks in their lives, just like I did.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My journey was not easy. I grew up with no family support and basically grew up alone, but with faith in God, I always knew that I could do anything. One of my favorite verses from the Bible that I always like to remember goes like this, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” -Philippians 4:13. I’m also blessed to say that my wife Claudia and my 4 kids have helped me so much through this journey; they have definitely been my strength.

As you know, we’re big fans of Aztec Ink Tattoos. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Aztec Ink is one of the 1st Hispanic owned tattoo studios here in Grand Rapids. I specialize in Black & grey. I’m known for mastering chicano tattoos which are black and grey color fine lines, detailed and soft shading. Chicano tattoos regularly incorporate realistic portraits, religious, cultural, and lettering. I’m proud that I’m able to share my art with the world and have made so many people happy with my art. I want to let everyone know that I take pride in every piece I take on, and I hope it shows. In this industry, a good work ethic, communication, and accountability go a long way. Those are some of the most important things I strive to maintain and give you in our experience together. Go ahead and explore, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to learn more.
