Hidden Gems: Meet Monique Morton of Simplly Refined Catering

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Morton.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello, my name is Chef Mo. As a kid, I was about my food and snacks 😂. Ramen noodles and hot dogs were my favorite! But just like everyone you get tired of eating the same thing all the time. So as the baby of 3 kids, I began watching my parents and the women in my family cook. I was careful to pay attention to the seasonings they use. I use to go over my grandmother’s house and we would just watch Emeril and other cooking shows. Before I knew it, I was cooking for myself!

In high school, I had the opportunity to take a culinary arts class and fell in love! From that point on I went to Schoolcraft College and transitioned to Arts institute of MI. I gained so much knowledge. At 20 I had my first first child and let’s just say she was my motivation for pushing my career a step further. I started working at White Castle in Canton, MI. As a regular employee, I began making breakfast before breakfast was on the menu 😂. I would take the buns and make a French toast. After a few years, I began working at the hospital as a housekeeper. I would prepare new items and took them to work to get feedback and before I knew it, I was selling food at the hospital!

In 2014 I decided to take the leap and start my catering company known as Simplly Refined Catering. I knew I had good flavor profile, and it was time for the world to experience.! It was a lot harder than I expected; however, I was determined! I put in the time and before I knew it, I began getting the recognition. I have done weddings, corporate luncheons, retirement parties, birthdays, graduations and the list goes on!

If you have ever had the pleasure of booking me, then you would understand why my clients are so loyal! Not only is the food great but my professionalism and overall attitude is top notch!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road! I suffer from endometriosis. Endometriosis is a disorder in which the tissue similar to the inner lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. Due to the negligence by my doctor, it resulted in it spreading up my abdomen and fusing my organs together! I have had so many surgeries just to keep things from spreading. However, despite health problems, I’m STILL grinding with the help of my team!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Simplly Refined Catering?
Simplly Refined Catering is a household brand! This company is built on hard work, dedication, and the taste of love with every bite! I do this because it’s something I’m passionate about it’s not just about the money and it shows in my presentation. When you book with Chef Mo, you will get professionalism and great presentation every time! You will walk away from the event feeling like you have known me forever and money well spent.

I’m known for a few items

Lamb Chops

Oxtails

Cajun Shrimp Alfredo

Henny BBQ Sauce

Bang sauce

Charcuterie Displays

It’s to a point I can make these dishes in my sleep 😂.

What sets me apart is I’m grounded in my craft, and the attention to detail coupled with the enthusiasm of seeing people satisfied makes my food much more pleasurable. I had a client taste my green beans with Turkey neck and said it “reminded her of her mom’s who recently passed and asked if she could get the recipe.” It’s moments like this that touches me!

When it comes to my brand, I’m very proud of how far it has come. In extension to my business, I have partnered up with Ms. Sam’s Village daycare to teach toddlers nutrition and teach them to have fun with food. I have gotten kids to get excited about vegetables and salad and learn how to do kid-friendly recipes. The last year I have also partnered up with Experiencedamour. When you book with her my role as a contracted Private Chef is to prepare a 3-course meal on sight.

Moving forward, I will be offering cooking classes (virtual or in person), my infamous sauces for sale, and meal kits. So, stay tuned!

Who else deserves credit for your story?
My mentors growing up were my parents and grandmothers, so with that seed being planted it grew into the go-getter you see today! I would like to thank my husband for pushing me beyond the limits I set on myself and  for always speaking life into me and my business!  I would like to thank my team for always being supportive, promoting and representing me well! It’s true when they say it “takes  a village” but I will not be where I am if it wasn’t for Jehovah God! By faith alone  I have been able to grow my business to the point moving forward, I’m happy to announce I will be offering cooking classes (virtual or in person), my infamous sauces and meal kits. So, stay tuned!
