Hidden Gems: Meet Latrice Farris Morgan of Farris Hair Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latrice Farris Morgan. 

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Styling hair has been my passion since I was a little girl. I can remember as far back as 10 years old styling hair for family, friends, and neighbors in my spare time. It was during this time I discovered my innate ability to do hair in a way that brought joy to people. After I would style someone’s hair, I loved to see their reaction to the transformation of their hair. It is because of this passion that I decided to attend cosmetology school. During my tenure in cosmetology school, I learned to style different hair textures, I learned about chemical reactions, various scalp conditions, and the technical side of hair care.

I was surprised to learn that most of the hair care products sold in stores during that time were loaded with chemicals and additives that could potentially be damaging to hair. These particular chemicals and additives also do not alleviate damaged hair, dry hair, split ends, itchiness, dandruff, dry scalp, or other scalp conditions.  I also learned that the pores are open during the shampooing process and how important it is to nurture the scalp with healthy organic products because these products go directly into one’s bloodstream. This revelation was the fuel that lit the fire for me to create a hair care product line tailored for all hair textures that promote healthy hair, nourish the scalp, and are safe for the body.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Of course not. There have been several bumps in the road. Rebranding my business was the biggest hurdle. It was hard to accept the change, but it was necessary for the future of the business. Some of my greatest lessons were birthed from mistakes I made in business decisions around sourcing quality ingredients, branding, and packaging. I encountered so many financial losses along the way. I looked forward to the autonomy and advantages of entrepreneurship, but I soon discovered that I needed to learn how to budget my time between the demands of business operations, working a full-time job, and self-care. Time management is imperative for productivity and my overall wellness. Throughout the journey, my struggles have shown me that it’s so important to have confidence in your own ability in order to push through any barrier.

As you know, we’re big fans of Farris Hair Care. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Farris Hair Care Co. was founded on the principle of nourishing healthy hair with natural products. Our research has proven that healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. Therefore, we select natural ingredients that treat both hair and scalp. That is why 98% of our ingredients are all-natural and plant-based. Before an ingredient is added to a batch of our hair care products, it can either be consumed or used topically. To familiarize our customers on the importance and proper application of our natural hair care products and to provide a platform for Q&A, Farris Hair Care Co has published live tutorials via Instagram.

We strive to provide a stellar customer service model  and that plays a major role in our core values. Additionally, to maintain high-quality products and guarantee a consistent experience for all customers, we have implemented a quality control process that requires an evaluation of the ingredients before use, testing batches during production, and then a final quality check during packaging. As a black-owned and operated small business, it has been my greatest honor to be widely received and to flourish within an industry where the market is saturated with alternative natural hair care companies. We recently rebranded which included a name change and the market has responded positively. In an industry where the demand is surging, our focus is to never sacrifice the principle of having a natural plant-based product for a methodology that is easier, more accessible, or less expensive. My entrepreneurial journey has taught me that the road to triumph begins with a vision and is a consistent climb.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Yes, “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson is one of my favorite books. I’ve read it several times, and the message never gets old to me. It is an easy read that always encourages me not to fear the unknown and to embrace change. There are other resources that I use to remind me to operate from a place of genuineness which will forever manifest the best of me.
