Hidden Gems: Meet Khalifah Green of Womb Wise Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khalifah Green.

Khalifah Green

Hi Khalifah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started in birth work at a young age, but I had no clue that’s what I was doing. My family always helped those in need, and I was the neighborhood baby sitter who was obsessed with shows like TLC’s “A Baby Story”. Anytime someone had a baby or became ill my mom would care for them and I was right there watching her cook meals, clean up, run errands etc. When the show “Call the Midwife” came about a childhood friend told me it’s what I needed to do! Everything seemed so familiar about loving on others in their time of need, creating community. I began researching and honestly it became a bit overwhelming so I left it as just a thought in the back of my mind. Years later Black women were the headlines almost daily, our death rates in childbirth were skyrocketing. I thought back on the times I helped with friends births and knew I could offer support maybe even hoped to make a difference. I became certified and have worked nonstop to advocate, educate and support families. Now that the State of Michigan covers Doula support with Medicaid, I along with many others have an amazing opportunity to care for a notoriously underserved population.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being in birth work hasnt been and isn’t a smooth road. There’s barriers to being trained like cost or distance. For me I was still nursing my child when I officially stepped into this role and working a 9-5 so at almost every training I had a car seat, baby, and a notebook. Everyone doesn’t have support or childcare to be able to attend continuing education seminars that are often required by your certifying body. Sometimes medical providers in the hospital are dismissive or even disrespectful, I’ve heard horror stories that could make you cry! Medicaid is a nightmare to navigate with becoming a provider and billing. You can go 30-90 days without pay!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
As a full spectrum doula, community educator, and herbalist I have dedicated my life to uplifting people and communities, promoting holistic health, and supporting people through their transformative journeys. I fearlessly advocate for individuals of all backgrounds, honoring the diverse range of reproductive experiences, including birth, postpartum, abortion, and miscarriage. My compassionate and inclusive approach empowers clients to embrace the full spectrum of their reproductive choices with confidence and self-assurance. I also offer traditional postpartum practices like belly binding, bone closing, and placenta encapsulation

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see a boom of Doulas coming to the industry within the next 5 years or sooner. There’s lots of funding for trainings and I look forward to there being more options for people to feel and be supported in their biggest times of need. Even home births have increased by 60% so I see a return to traditional living and practices. I hope to see more postpartum care like what we provide at The Postpartum Sanctuary Retreat. Michigans first Postpartum getaway where we provide nutritious meals, round the clock care, and education for families 0-12 months
