**Title: From Adversity to Inspiration: My Journey as a Hair Stylist and salon owner**
**Introduction:**
Hi, my name is Buffy, and I’ve been a hair stylist for 30 years. My journey has been filled with challenges, but it has ultimately shaped me into the professional I am today.
**Early Career:**
I started my career full of enthusiasm and passion, eager to make my mark in the beauty industry. However, just a few years in, I began to face unexpected hurdles. I developed severe allergies to ammonia, petrochemicals, and artificial fragrances, which made my daily work increasingly difficult.
**Struggles with Allergies:**
At first, I was unaware that there were products available that didn’t contain these harsh chemicals. As my allergies worsened, I found myself having to wear a respirator while working on my clients. Despite the discomfort, my clients appreciated my dedication, and I didn’t want to let them down. I continued to perm and color hair, determined to provide the best service I could.
**A Turning Point:**
In the early 2000s, everything changed when my sales representative introduced me to a new line of products free from ammonia, synthetic fragrances, and colorants. Initially, I was hesitant; I had tried countless products before with little success. But this time, I decided to give it a shot, and it worked!
**A New Chapter:**
With these new, safer products, I could finally serve my clients without the fear of an allergic reaction. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. We transformed our 2 story Victorian home into my organic salon and day spa in Jones, Michigan—right in the heart of farm country.
**Current Success:**
Today, my salon is a beautiful two-story Victorian house, home to nine talented hair stylists, a massage therapist, and a salon coordinator. As I approach retirement, I’ve found a new passion in teaching fresh graduates from beauty school, sharing my knowledge and experience.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Besides the allergies to the products in my journey, I would say the hardest struggle that was was the shutdown for covid-19.
As a business owner I was responsible for all of my staff and clients.
No one knew when we would be going back to work, clients called nonstop wondering what we were going to do about their next appointment.
I think the hardest struggle was making sure all my staff had paychecks because they still had families to take care of that was a lot of pressure.

What makes me truly happy is seeing clients that I’ve been servicing for over 30 years happy with one of my newer younger talented stylist.
Hearing the clients say how lucky my staff is that I teach them everyrhing i know.
