Today we’d like to introduce you to Niketa Sutton.
Hi Niketa, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been very crafty and creative, with a passion for décor. Often, I’d decorate and create various props and details for my granddaughter’s birthday parties; taking them from ordinary to extraordinary. My passion and love for all things balloons, however, came about during the pandemic while in quarantine 2 years ago.
This was a very sad and depressing time and to make matters worse my son, the youngest of my three children, had decided to join the Army National Guard. He was in his junior year of high school at the time and during summer break was allowed to start Basic Combat Training. During this time, he would be gone for approximately 10 weeks. This would be the first time he’d be away from home and myself for more than a week, and like any other mother when her youngest, or any of her children, leaves “the nest,” I was a nervous, worrying wreck. To keep myself distracted from worrying, I turned my attention to throwing him the most elaborate welcome home party, full of fun details. It was during this time I discovered the world of balloon décor.
As an enthusiastic autodidact, I taught myself how to create balloons by watching several tutorials on how to create balloon garlands, arches and columns. I then began to practice different techniques learned from watching these tutorials. There was a lot of trial and error that took place before I successfully created my very first garland and set of columns that were used for my son’s celebration. During this exploratory time of learning, I found that I rather enjoyed working with balloons, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t like balloons? Balloons bring so much joy and happiness, they are the life of the party and balloons add that “WOW” factor to any celebration. Looking back I truly didn’t think air and latex, because that’s what balloons are, air and latex, would have such a profound impact on my life.
From there I joined a few balloon groups on facebook and began to follow various experienced balloon artists on Instagram. Eager to learn as much as I possibly could about balloons I then began to take online courses offered by more experienced balloon artists whose work I admire. Combining various learned techniques, tips and tricks along the way I created my own unique style.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My balloon décor business is still fairly new, less than two years in now, so I’m still growing my client base and learning what it truly means to be an entrepreneur. Thus far it has been a fun and exciting experience. I can honestly say that I’ve had some of the most amazing clients. They truly allow me creative freedom when it comes to my creations for them. They give me a theme or color scheme, and the rest is left up to me.
I would say the biggest challenges along the way have been overcoming the hurdle of being my own worst critic. Once I stopped comparing my work to those who have been doing this longer than I have, I realized that I’m just as talented as those whose work I admire. The greatest reward, however, comes from the happiness and joy expressed by my clients when they receive their finished creations.
Charging my worth, experiencing, enduring and surviving breast cancer over the past 9 months along with learning how to balance my business, full-time job, and home life has also been very challenging.
