Exploring Life & Business with Kara Comstock of Bare Skin Care Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Comstock.

Hi Kara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I quite literally stumbled into the world of beauty. There was a salon in Middleville where I would occasionally get my hair done and my hairdresser was very easy to talk to and knowledgeable! After we had a very in-depth conversation regarding toner and the color wheel, she recommended I look into cosmetology school myself. A few weeks later I had not only toured all of the schools in the area, I was enrolled to start that Fall, at Douglas J Aveda Institute! I finished my program in 12 months as a part-time student, I was home with my boys during the day and went to school at night, and was licensed and working by January 2014! Our industry has such a wide range of specialties and it was also by chance that I stumbled into hair removal instead of working behind the chair, I sent resumes to a hair salon and a waxing salon and the rest is history! I spent the next 8 years perfecting my craft and making connections and relationships with clients that are definitely more like family than even friends. Caitlyn and I became fast friends when she moved over to West Michigan’ from the East side and it just made sense to ask her to join me at Sola when I finally decided to take the leap!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey to Bare was a LONG one and we definitely had some struggles along the way. This industry can be a little intense and cutthroat which can lead to being taken advantage of, whether it’s the threat of a non-compete or misclassification of employee or low-hall wages/commissions and we’ve had our fair share of all 3!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a women-owned Skincare studio that specializes in hair removal (waxing or sugaring), corrective skin treatments (facial, back, booty & Vagacial), and eyebrow and eyelash services (brow lamination, lash lift, tint). We are most well-known for waxing, Brazilians mostly. We use hard wax on ALL sensitive areas because we know the importance of maintaining the integrity of your skin, which also sets us apart from other salons. It took a few years of trying what felt like EVERY wax on the planet but we knew what we did/didn’t want in a formula and just actually received our first test shipment for our own private label waxes, hard wax beads, and soft wax rollers! I think our proudest moment was when we realized we weren’t crazy for jumping head first into this venture and that we were going to be able to do so much more for the industry AND pay our bills lol

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The possibilities are ENDLESS! We have begun assembling a collective of our favorite beauty babes and are always looking for kind-hearted & hardworking professionals to join us! Email/text/DM for more information!
