Exploring Life & Business with Danielle Aguirre of Covered in Frosting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Aguirre.

Hi Danielle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have been making cakes for a little over 7 years now. I’m sure I baked plenty before then, but my first “real” cake was for my nephew’s second birthday. After watching, hours of cake competitions on the Food Network throughout my life I was convinced that I could do that too. My first cake was an ambitious two-tier, fondant-covered Car’s cake. As it turned out, I was pretty good at the whole cake decorating thing. So, I continued to teach myself!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacle in starting this business was me. I’d been told for years that I should start a business. And I always felt like that was a crazy thing to say as if it was that easy! But when I left my job right before the pandemic, I realized I couldn’t go back to working for someone else or go back to a job that didn’t bring me joy or fulfillment. So, starting my business kept becoming more and more of an actual option, and with the endless support and encouragement of my partner, I officially started Covered in Frosting in October 2020.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Even though my business is built around making custom cakes and desserts, Covered in Frosting has become known for colorful and creative cakesicles, which are cake pops made in popsicle molds instead of the traditional round shape. We frequent a number of Farmers Markets all over the Downriver area, as well as vendor events with other local businesses where we almost exclusively sold cakesicles, but this year I really want to highlight my cake recipes and showcase some of my other baking skills.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Owning my own business and having a job I genuinely love brings me so much joy. And that joy and happiness is contagious! It is my favorite thing to see someone’s face light up when they see their birthday cake or try something I’ve made.
