Today we’d like to introduce you to August Familant
Hi August , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey started in a small-town popcorn shop, where I worked throughout high school and early college. The shop was run by a married couple who had a real passion for what they did, and being part of that environment made me fall in love with leadership, business ownership, and the impact a business can have on a community. That’s when I realized—my biggest dream was to build something of my own.
I knew I wanted to start a business, but figuring out what took some trial and error. I experimented with a kayak rental company, an apparel and sticker brand, and a few other ideas. But by the time I reached the middle of college, it finally clicked—what I really loved was design, branding, and marketing.
After college, I got hands-on experience at a couple of agencies, learned the ropes, and sharpened my skills. Now, I’m making the leap and starting my own. I’ve put together a small but insanely talented team of designers, and I have a partner who helps bring in and manage clients. We’re building something great, and I couldn’t be more excited.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been an easy road. It’s taken time, a lot of trial and error, and plenty of failures to get to a place where I can successfully run a startup. I’m still in a season of life where things are constantly shifting, which makes staying as consistent as I’d like a challenge. But I do my best to roll with it—because every setback, every lesson, and every challenge pushes me to grow. In the end, that’s what makes me better.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We started Bakflip Media because we’re insanely passionate about bringing ideas to life in a way that’s fun, approachable, and—most importantly—effective. Our goal is to help businesses create standout branding, social media content, and websites without the sky-high agency price tags.
What sets us apart is our ability to blend high-quality creative work with accessibility. We believe in making great design and marketing available to smaller businesses without devaluing the craft. Whether it’s a pest control company, a therapy practice, or a private chef, we bring the same level of creativity and strategy to every project.
At the end of the day, we’re here to help brands grow with bold ideas, smart execution, and a genuine love for what we do.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve been super lucky to work with some insanely talented designers, developers, photographers, videographers, and business owners. Every project, every collaboration has taught me something new and helped me grow. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the people I’ve worked alongside—they’ve shaped my skills, pushed me to be better, and inspired me every step of the way. I owe a lot of my knowledge and success to them, and I’m beyond grateful for it. Also, my family and friends deserve a ton of credit for all the love and support. My people keep me going.
