Daily Inspiration: Meet Toheeb Bello

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toheeb Bello.

Hi Toheeb, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Man, where to start?!? Well, it began during the pandemic, I was finishing my bachelor’s in kinesiology and sports medicine at Wayne State University and I wanted to venture into new hobbies that could help me delve deeper into myself since I was wrapping up with undergrad. As a result, a lot of self-reflection/prayer/and well-needed encouragement from the people around me, led to me buying a camera and starting my photography journey as well as the push to jump into nightlife and hosting events at the same time. All in all, it has been a journey that’s one for the books for real and we just getting started.

With photography, I began taking pictures of my friends and small events and it quickly grew through networking and exploring into nightlife with my friends. The clientele started to grow with lifestyle shoots, graduation pictures, birthdays, etc. and the opportunities did the same when I started taking pictures of concerts, album release parties, clubs, and festivals. A special shoutout to all my peers in the photography world, it’s so many people to give acknowledgment to and I don’t wanna leave anyone out but we all headed to the top and we’re taking over!

Hosting took a similar path, I took a big leap out of my comfort zone and was hosting Greek events and house parties, and then it catapulted into hosting icebreakers, traveling state to state, and summertime bangers. It definitely helped with a lot of major players in nightlife and college promotors/groups collaborating on events, and giving me a platform to show what I could bring to the table! Special shoutout to everyone who believed in me, worked with me and gave me free game throughout this process ! And I can’t forget anyone who booked me or came to events to support and see the growth from then to now! I love y’all all!

Both hobbies turned into passions in over a year, and it’s definitely been a roller coaster ride to say the least.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I knew both were gonna have good and bad things about them, but there is beauty in the struggle, and it makes you appreciate everything 10x more. Personally, I’ve been blessed with a lot of opportunities that came from the grind of starting at the bottom and working my way up in both photography and hosting. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing with me juggling finishing my bachelor’s and working full time. Then, having to deal with the hurdles of the game with having to build a crowd/clientele, getting booked consistently, and constantly proving yourself time and time again to show you deserve the opportunities you want. It can take a toll on you sometimes, but with prayer, positivity, and the belief in what I can bring to the table, it hasn’t been too hard to overcome any of those obstacles.

In the wise words of one of my favorite artists Larry June: “It’s ups and downs in anything, keep going my n**ga it’s better days!”

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Host and Photographer in the Detroit Nightlife scene! My strong suits include hosting parties and events, whether it be Greek, birthday parties, themed events, etc. In photography, I hang my hat on graduation pictures, birthday shoots, lifestyle/freelance shoots, nightlife and club photography, and concert photography!

One of the biggest things I’ve been proud of is staying true to myself while taking such a big step out of my comfort zone. This allowed me to be comfortable with any opportunity thrown in my direction and be able to seize the moment in my own style and way!

In my opinion, what sets me apart is my ability to impact people in a way that makes them want to have fun, enjoy themselves, and be the best version of themselves. That, along with my personality, drive, and ability to connect and still be able to show love to everyone around me, has made me who I am today!

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned to take care of my mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual, especially as a black man in the world today! Something that is really important to me is: always to say a prayer and go get what you prayed for and keep the people who make you a better person in your life because life is short! Lastly, push yourself out of your comfort zone because that’s where you grow as a person!
