Daily Inspiration: Meet Melvina Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melvina Smith.

Hi Melvina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In March 2020 the beginning of the Pandemic, I began my LLC Boss Lady Virgin Hair Collection. It started as a spiritual journey as I personally experienced hair loss due to chronic long-term illnesses. Once recovered I discovered how not only I could benefit from wearing hair extensions and wigs but others could as well. I wanted my line of natural hair care to be practical and inviting to many. I came up with my brand name because it personified taking ownership of my life including limitations once placed on me by circumstances out of my control. I used this to position myself in the driver’s seat. Not being a victim of things that happen but creating something from nothing, beauty that lies beneath and in us all. After two and a half years of online presence and local pop-up shop adventures, I am excited to be on the verge of leasing my first retail storefront in the coming weeks. I want to serve as a reminder to all who dare to dream in bigger, don’t give up. Be your own inspiration and invest, reinvent and execute against all odds. Boss Lady is more than great hair, It’s a movement.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth sailing road. It has cost thousands of dollars without a great return at times. This was in part due to my not having proper financial plan in place from day one. Other obstacles I have learned to overcome have been finding reliable suppliers. I have since found several trusted suppliers who have been extremely helpful in adding value to my brand. Lastly, discovering it is ok to recreate or enhance my brand’s vision for itself from packaging to product development. It is essential for me to bring a quality product and service to my clientele. A consistent brand presence.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Being a single mom life taught me to be an overcomer of much. After graduating from Dorsey schools of business with certification in Computer applications, I spent the past 18 years on and off invested in community service, volunteering as a proud Headstart mom. I served on its Policy Council as Vice-chair for two years and corresponding secretary as well as a variety of other committees there.

Since those days throughout my health battles, I persevered on completing medical billing school at Ross Medical center. Enjoyed employment with Quicken Loans as Homeowner’s insurance specialist and Insurance verification specialist with Contemporary Dentistry.

I am most known by others as a mom to two young men whom I have taught to fight through mental health struggles along with their challenges of also being on the Autism Spectrum. I also have the privilege of being mom to their younger sister an amazing spirit. They are my “why”. Lastly, being the daughter of my mom, a great natural boss lady, propelled me to live up to her values instilled in me throughout my entire life. Her words with God all things are possible.

I think what makes me unique is the fact that I am a regular person. I have the honor of being a daughter, mother, sister, and friend to so many amazing individuals from all walks of life. I have a faith so strong I know anything is possible if I just believe but I know faith without works is dead. I am most proud of the ability to connect with anyone who will listen.

What’s next?
I am looking forward to the continued evolution of myself, my family, and my brand. I am elated at what is to come next. I have numerous additions to my brand coming. My hopes and plans are to eventually have several storefronts though out the country as well as implementing salons inside them all and offering charitable makeovers in the communities.
