Today we’d like to introduce you to Maiya Legardye
Hi Maiya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Flint Local 432 has a long and storied history as one of the longest-running all-ages music venues in the country. It was founded in the mid-1980s as a space for young people in Flint to experience live music in a safe, substance-free environment. Over the years, it has hosted thousands of bands, from local up-and-comers to national touring acts.
The venue has gone through several evolutions, relocating multiple times but always providing a platform for artists and a gathering place for the community. After a brief closure, Flint Local 432 was revived under the umbrella of Factory Two. Today, we remain dedicated to supporting musicians, artists, and young creatives by hosting concerts, workshops, and community events that celebrate Flint’s DIY spirit.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest road, but the challenges have only strengthened the Flint Local 432. Over the years, we’ve faced financial struggles, venue closures, and the ever-changing landscape of the music industry. As an all-ages, substance-free venue, sustainability has always been a challenge, especially in a city like Flint where economic hardships impact both artists and audiences.
Flint Local 432 has moved multiple times over the decades, often due to funding limitations or changes in building ownership. Each move has required rebuilding from the ground up—physically, financially, and in terms of community engagement.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As the General Manager of Flint Local 432, I wear a lot of hats—literally and figuratively. I oversee the venue’s operations, book and coordinate events, and act as the head sound engineer. Beyond that, I’m a music producer, songwriter, and clothing designer, so I try to bring a creative perspective to everything I do.
I’m most proud of the way we’ve been able to keep the Local alive and evolving since taking over in 2022. It’s way more than just a venue to me—it’s a hub for artists, musicians, and young creatives to express themselves and build community. I think what sets me apart is my hands-on approach. Whether it’s running sound, designing flyers, or mentoring up-and-coming artists, I’m deeply involved in every aspect of making sure our shows and programs have an impact.
Flint has an incredible underground music scene, and I want to make sure it continues to thrive. My goal is to not only preserve the legacy of Flint Local 432 but to push it forward, creating more opportunities for artists and ensuring that the next generation has a place to be heard.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is making sure Flint Local 432 remains a space that’s accessible and welcoming to everyone. I believe in creating an environment where all forms of creativity can thrive, and where people can explore different aspects of the arts—whether it’s music, fashion, visual art, or something else entirely. It’s about fostering a sense of community and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to express themselves.
Equally important is staying true to the roots of Flint Local 432. We’re an underground, local venue, and keeping that authenticity is vital. The youth are the heart of what we do, so we make it a priority to create programming and events that center them and offer a platform for their voices. We’re here to support emerging talent, keep the scene alive, and nurture the next generation of artists, creators, and thinkers. That’s what keeps it all grounded and meaningful for me.
