Daily Inspiration: Meet Ellie DuRussel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellie DuRussel.

Hi Ellie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a very creative and artistic mind, growing up I loved everything from drawing to working with my Cameo Silhouette. But as I got into middle and high school, there was a lot more emphasis on success in math and science which I also excelled at. I took the most rigorous academic schedule I could in high school to the point where I got super burned out and decided to take a small step back and take a photography course. I began this photography course just as the pandemic hit. I spent my time in quarantine working on this photography course that honestly didn’t teach me a lot but it did spark my interest in portrait photography. From there, I watched a lot of YouTube videos to learn the best techniques, the best equipment, and the best locations. I forced my best friend Alexis to serve as my model and I started posting my images on Instagram and Facebook. Slowly, that turned into a website and I began booking high school seniors. While I love doing portraits for seniors, my true passion lies in wedding photography. In this season of my business, I have been attending styled shoots and contacting couples to build my wedding photography portfolio. During my learning period, I stumbled across Katelyn James Photography and I absolutely fell in love with her teaching style and her wholesome personality. I have now taken three photography courses from her.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. In the day and age of cheap DSLR cameras, anyone can market themselves as a professional photographer and the market of photographers is vast. It is hard to stand out and a lot of the times, it’s discouraging when you have long stretches of no inquiries. I also remember the first summer of my business just being absolutely sick of editing photos late at night and that really made me contemplate quitting. Luckily, I did not and I was able to find purpose in what I was doing

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a photographer, I do both digital and film photography with more emphasis on digital. I am most known for my golden hour photo shoots of glowy soft light. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in developing my style and how much more consistent my Instagram has become in an aesthetic way. In this area, I feel that my light, airy, timeless, near fine art style sets me apart from most of the vibrant and moody photographers in my area.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was very split as a kid between being a creative type and an analytical mathematic type. I think God blessed me with a perfectionist personality that made me good at a wide range of things. I truthfully just work really hard until something is phenomenal or outstanding. The split between creative and analytical always made me frustrated because I have such a calling towards math and science but creative things like photography make me so happy.
