Daily Inspiration: Meet Devontae Driver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devontae Driver.

Hi Devontae, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started as a young kid, watching my brother draw freehand sketches, effortlessly; seeing some of my cousin’s portfolio work; first drawing I remember seeing from him was a 2-PAC portrait, I believe, drawn from charcoal pencils. Even growing up with my younger cousin, just creating random comic book stories. Soon, I started creating digital work using Microsoft Paint on a Dell desktop, which leaded me to expand more on my artistry by painting a mural at Benton Harbor Charter School for which I attended throughout my elementary and middle school years. Adding on, art became a skill I picked up on throughout my early age of school leading to high school. Digital art became a strong passion once I learned some basic skills on Adobe Photoshop and 3D interior design in high school.

I attended SOUTHWESTERN MICHIGAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE for which I learned such skills as 2-D drawing, 3-D drawing, typography, publishing, color-schemes, photography, portfolio production, photoshop editing and more.
Since then, I began to build my portfolio by designing logos, cover art, flyers, and etc… for local artists, business owners, and more. I have a decade of experience in designing. It led me to work with great clients and also be featured in Capsule’s PICTORIA VOL. 3, book magazine with other talents.

I describe my art style to be rugged, colorful, story-telling, detail-oriented and cultural.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenges I had to face weren’t easy. Suffering from an eye condition back in 2019-2020, which could’ve leaded me to blindness in one eye and hopefully leading to a successful surgery. I didn’t think I would continue to pursue the journey on my artistry. Luckily, I had a successful surgery, thanks to the doctors and nurses. That just gave me an extra boost to continue on the path.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am multi-disciplinary creative. I specialize in graphic design and arts, but I am also a photographer. and videographer.

Most of my work is known for from designing creative logos, music cover art, street and event photography (street photographer first) and customizing shoes using paint.

I think that’s what sets me apart because I am a jack of all trades when it comes to creating and not setting a barrier on your talent and skills.

I am proud of just knowing how to create things from scratch, not only for myself as an artist, but for others. I rather create things how I see it. That thinking so much of the outcome but enjoying the process behind it. If I can leave a piece of history behind, I’ll continue to do that for the rest of my life.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think those who knows me and others that knows me outside of my work, they don’t know that I like peace and quietness. Since I am mostly on the scene a lot of times and somewhat extroverted, most might think I speak a lot or life of the party. But I rather be at home chilling on the game in my own man cave, listening to all types of genres of music from artists like Future, Curren$y, Benton Harbor musicians and more. Also, listening to songs like Walking on a Dream by Empire of the Sun, Everybody Loves the Sunshine by Roy Ayers and Holding Back the Years by Simply Red.
